About Us
The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!
Description of Work
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
This position is located at Craven Correctional Institution in Vanceboro, NC, Craven County. The prison is a Medium Custody Adult Male Felon Diagnostic Processing Center which houses 850 offenders. Employees in this class provide clerical support to the Associate Warden for Custody / Operations and the staff in that section.
Key Duties Include:
Typing, answering telephone, transcription of dictation, making copies, etc.
Support is provided to the AW for Custody as well as approximately 250 custody employees within the section
Frequently composes correspondence independent of rough drafts and prepares minutes for meetings and provides confidential clerical support to the entire custody section
Processes and acts on confidential information; maintains calendar for the AW for Custody
Coordinates mail delivery for the Custody Section
Responsible for uploading various types of documentation and reports into electronic and web-based database tracking systems
Prepares Emergency Leave Packages, maintains/updates the custody shift rosters and manager on-call rosters
Tracks disciplinary actions and approved facility incident reports
Proficiently use computers, dictation equipment, copy machines, fax machines, telephones and other standard office equipment
Proficiently use Microsoft Word and be able to type at least 50 WPM
Good written and verbal communication skills and ability to work under sometimes stressful conditions resulting from time constraints and expected deadlines
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Range: $31,200 - $51,249
Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:
· Documented knowledge of human resource, personnel functions.
· Documented experience using Microsoft Officer and/or any related software.
· Documented experience carrying out both oral and written instructions.

About the Division of Institutions:
The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.
