Full job description
Job Purpose/Description
Consultants in the Rose Warner Writing and Critical Thinking Center provide one-to-one sessions in writing support. Consultants work with peers from all St. Scholastica’s programs — of all skill levels, and at any point in their projects. Accordingly, consultants are expected to have a strong background in writing and enjoy working with writers across various levels. Work typically involves conversation and collaboration with students on specific writing assignments, including—but not limited to—essays, research papers, and literature reviews. Consultants typically work 4-10 hours per week and schedules are set one semester at a time. Consultant training meetings are scheduled periodically throughout each term, and training sessions cover writing center pedagogy and best practices, writing resources, and student support strategies.
Job Duties
Facilitate conversations with peers as one-to-one conversations. Guide, suggest, and encourage the development of the writing process and skills.
Review written work, compare it to assignment prompts and/or writer goals, and provide thoughtful, appropriate feedback and prompts for clarity, critical thinking, and argumentation.
Provide feedback on proper citation methods and help writers develop their own citation skills and confidence.
Provide feedback on issues of mechanics, grammar, punctuation, and editing as needed and help writers develop their own editing skills and confidence.
Create a welcoming and academic environment for students (of all backgrounds and experiences) and establish personal rapport with writers.
Assist with providing feedback on asynchronous online paper submissions.
Attend all required training sessions and team meetings. Be willing to assist with other staff initiatives, programming events, and any special workshops or events as requested by the Director and Assistant Director.
Refer students to specific campus departments or resources as needed.
Keep regular and accurate records of sessions and hours, and maintain regular communication with the Director.
During paid hours, consultants may be asked to work on other Writing Center-focused projects as assigned by their supervisor, including but not limited to class visits, creating handouts and resources, etc.
Required Qualifications
Must be at least a second-year CSS student in the fall
Must have completed First-Year Composition (ENG 1110 or equivalent) with an “A” or “A-.”
Possess strong, demonstrable written and verbal communication and critical thinking skills.
Show skill and willingness to interact with a wide variety of people in a friendly, professional manner.
Demonstrate responsible decision-making, punctuality, self-motivation, and organizational skills.
Have experience with Google Documents, Gmail, Excel, Microsoft Word, and other writing-related software applications.
