Job Title: Community Assistant - Student Position
Reports To:Associate Director of Resident Experience
Location:Discovery House at University of Maryland
Compensation: $15.00 per hour
FLSA Status: Student Non-Exempt – Position not eligible for benefits
Summary
The Community Assistant works to support the 24/7 Service Desk at Discovery House. The Commnity Assistant serves as the first point of contact for residents. Community Assistants (CA) are responsible for establishing and maintaining a positive and welcoming environment for all students. Community Assistants will participate in responding to facilities emergencies after business hours and will assist with all resident services including mail, keys, and general questions. The Community Assistant reports to the Associate Director of Resident Experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Welcome residents and visitors in a professional, courteous manner.
Answer and appropriately route incoming telephone calls.
Manage resident package distribution and perform package audits.
Complete required shift audit reports at the end of every shift.
Monitor loaner key fobs and access cards, ensuring timely returns and resident follow-up.
Conduct regular key inventory and audit procedures.
Perform data entry and maintain accurate records.
Prepare copies, scans, labels, files, and other administrative documents.
Assist with special projects as assigned.
Serve as a resource to residents providing accurate information and connecting residents with appropriate campus resources.
Complete nightly building rounds to identify maintenance, safety, and security concerns
Respond to after-hours facilities emergencies during assigned desk shifts.
Attend all required staff meetings, training sessions, and departmental events.
Maintain accurate documentation and records.
Protect confidential resident and university information.
Maintain an organized, clean, and professional work environment.
Follow all Discovery House and University of Maryland safety policies and procedures.
Complete all required online training courses by established deadlines.
Use all assigned keys and access devices in accordance with established procedures.
Support special events and periods requiring additional staffing, including August move-in.
Training and Time Commitments
Community Assistants are expected to fulfill all required training and operational commitments throughout the employment period.
Responsibilities include:
Be available to begin employment and participate in required training beginning July 27, 2026.
Residents of Discovery House selected for the position will receive an approved early move-in date to accommodate training.
Assist with all move-in and move-out operations.
Provide front desk coverage during holidays, semester breaks, exam periods, university closures when buildings remain open, and other designated periods.
Required Dates:
Summer Training: July 27 – July 31, 2026
Move-In Preparation: August 10 – August 12, 2026
Move-In Extended Coverage: August 12 – August 30, 2026
Spring Training: January 22, 2027
Participate in year-round 24/7 Service Desk coverage according to the team schedule.
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. High school diploma.
Be enrolled full-time as a degree-seeking student at the University of Maryland.
Be available for employment from July 2026 through May 2027.
Be available to work a minimum of three to five shifts each week.
Maintain good academic, behavioral, and disciplinary standing with the University.
Comply with all University of Maryland Student Code of Conduct policies.
Demonstrate professionalism, dependability, strong interpersonal skills, and excellent customer service.
Experience and knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
Ability to operate basic office equipment including a photocopier, fax, and telephone. Basic typing and filing skills.
Ability to lift up to 35lbs and navigate up and down stairs.
If residing at Discovery House, remain in good standing with all terms of the housing license agreement (Community Assistants are not required to live at Discovery House).
Compensation
$15.00 per hour. Pay occurs on a bi-weekly schedule. Work between 10-20 hours each week. No more than 20-hours each week.
