Position Overview
The Illinois School for the Deaf (ISD) is a large residential school serving students who are Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing. The mission of ISD is to engage students in a supportive, safe, and nurturing environment to achieve personal excellence academically, socially, physically, and emotionally. This position serves as the Labor Relations Advisor and administers the Workers Compensation program for the Illinois School for the Deaf and the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired. Illinois School for the Deaf (ISD) and Illinois School for the Visually Impaired (ISVI) are seeking to hire an individual with strong leadership, critical thinking, and communication skills.
Essential Functions
Serves as the Labor Relations Advisor for Illinois School for the Deaf (ISD) and Illinois School for the Visually Impaired (ISVI).
Directs and administers the Workers’ Compensation and Risk Management Programs for ISD and ISVI.
Prepares curriculum and provides training as needed for supervisors on contract changes and requirements, supervisor responsibilities and processes related to discipline and grievances and workers comp.
Reviews current processes, procedures, and polices related to labor relations and makes recommendations for updates and changes.
Serves as liaison for ISD and ISVI to Title IX Coordinator.
Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years college with course work in business or public administration.
Requires three (3) years progressively responsible administrative experience in labor relations and/or human resources.
Preferred Qualifications
Three (3) years of professional experience working with labor relations practices, principles, rules and collective bargaining contracts.
Three (3) years of professional experience providing technical information to management regarding discipline, grievances, and collective bargaining agreements.
Two (2) years of professional experience being responsible for Workers’ Compensation and Risk Management Programs for extended benefit and temporary total disability claims, state and federal requirements, policies, procedures, and practices for a public or private organization.
Two (2) years of professional experience investigating issues, analyzing possible outcomes and making recommendations for appropriate course of action.
Two (2) years of professional experience developing and implementing policies and procedures related to labor relation issues.
Two (2) years of professional experience communicating effectively (written and oral) with staff, students, and internal and external stakeholders.
Conditions of Employment
Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
Requires ability to create reports, documents and training materials using programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access.
Requires ability to travel.
Require the ability to work on an on-call basis including after normal business hours, weekends, and holidays.
