The Chief of Staff serves as a strategic partner to the President, focusing on aligning strategy, people, and culture to ensure sustainable growth. Key duties include leading organizational culture initiatives, facilitating Senior Leadership Team effectiveness, and driving firmwide strategic planning.
Requirements
Candidates should be trusted leaders with strong emotional intelligence and a systems-thinking approach to organizational design. Experience in Chief of Staff, Chief Equity Officer, or senior leadership roles within mission-driven organizations is highly preferred.
Full job description
Description
Who We Are:
Raben is a public policy, strategic communications and organizational consulting firm. Our talented and passionate team champions diversity, equity, and justice as core values that ignite our mission for impactful change in corporate, nonprofit, government, and foundation work. Our changemakers work to solve real-world problems and inspire lasting changes through our four service offerings: strategic communications, government affairs, issue campaigns, and culture, strategy, & organizational design.
We have been fueled by insightful strategy, creative tactics, and plain old hustle for over 20 years. We are people of color, women, immigrants, disabled, and LGBTQ. Spend time with us and you will quickly learn we value smarts, creativity, and audaciousness in just about all we do… and a sense of humor is a contractual must. Learn more at raben.co.
Raben is growing. We're creating a Chief of Staff role to help us grow on our own terms: aligned, accountable, and true to our values.
At Raben, we believe the way a firm operates internally should reflect the change it fights for externally. As a national public affairs and strategic communications firm, our work is mission-driven and high-stakes. This new role exists to help us scale that growth with discipline, coherence, and care, as a newly established seat on our Senior Leadership Team and a true strategic partner to the President.
Our values
We hire and lead by five values: Compassion, Integrity, Strategy, Equity, and Humor. This role is, in many ways, their steward.
Why this role, why now
Raben is entering a period of deliberate growth. This role exists to make that growth sustainable by aligning our strategy, people, culture, and execution. You will own the internal leadership and development work that lets the President focus outward on vision, relationships, and impact. You are not asked to be our deepest expert in public affairs. You are asked to make our leaders more effective, our systems stronger, and our culture more durable as we scale. This position is located in our DC office and follows a hybrid schedule with at least two days per week inoffice.
Requirements
What you'll lead
Organizational Culture: executive leadership for culture, equity-centered practice, transformation, leadership development, staff well-being, and accountability practices
Senior Leadership Team effectiveness: facilitating decision-making, clarifying roles, strengthening collaboration, and helping leaders navigate complexity and conflict
Strategy and alignment: leading firmwide strategic planning, translating it into measurable priorities, and driving cross-functional initiatives from idea to outcome while removing barriers along the way
Strategic partnership with the President: acting as trusted advisor, anticipating risks and opportunities, and ensuring follow-through on what matters most
Who you are
A trusted leader who moves fluidly between strategy, people leadership, skilled facilitation, and operational discipline
Someone with strong emotional intelligence and political acumen who is for everyone winning, resists taking sides between factions, and can transform conflict rather than avoid it
A systems thinker who understands how culture, leadership, operations, and strategy interconnect, and who can recognize when a systemic issue is showing up in the work rather than an isolated problem
An equity-centered practitioner who turns values into real policies, behaviors, and decisions, and who can navigate complexity as it shows up at the personal, interpersonal, organizational, and systemic levels
Strong candidates may come from Chief of Staff, Chief Equity Officer, organizational development, people & culture, strategy and operations, internal consulting or transformation, executive coaching, or senior leadership in mission-driven organizations.
Salary and benefits
The salary range for this role is $180,000 to $220,000 per year, commensurate with experience. Beyond a high degree of autonomy in your work, Raben colleagues enjoy a benefits suite that includes:
Health, dental, and vision insurance
Unlimited PTO
A rich professional development curriculum
3% 401(k) match
Yearly employer FSA contribution
Company-issued laptop and cell phone
And more
Application Instructions:
To apply, please submit an application, resume, via our online job portal. If you need accommodation during the recruitment process, please email your needs to [email protected].
Raben finds it quite natural to be an Equal Opportunity Employer, aspiring to live the values of equity in everything we do.
At Raben, our work isn’t simply transactional; we are driven to build lasting relationships centered around shared values and a collective vision for a better world.
We lead by example, going above and beyond to support our clients' goals. Our work to change cultural narratives, build coalitions, and fill unmet needs in society is helping to shift the faces of power and influence in America.
We’ve chosen client services as the manner through which we pursue our vision for a more equitable, just and fair America, because we’ve found this platform to be an effective means to engage the levers of power in our society — government, business, nonprofits, and philanthropy.
