Responsibilities
The intern will support research, program development, and compliance while providing direct clinical practice through social skills groups and coaching. They are also responsible for coordinating logistics, managing member communication, and enhancing the program's social media presence.
Requirements
Applicants must be current students as this is an unpaid internship opportunity. The role requires the ability to facilitate groups and provide social coaching for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Support implementation of baseline and post-intervention assessments for Hang Out SDH members. Summarize and enter data for the research department.
Review research summaries from previous years and note any trends.
Implement HFM’s annual feedback survey at the end of the social year for Hang Out, Level I, Jr. Alumni and Alumni members.
Partake in an annual SWOT to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to guide project planning and program focus for the following year.
Identify, assess, and apply to private funding streams (grant writing).
Compliance
Schedule meetings with representatives from various parts of the agency.
Complete new member file set up and data entry.
Maintain files digitally and in paper form.
Support an annual update of all HFM members to receive hard copies of current application & information on file and update system with newly provided information.
Write objective, individualized case notes for each Saturday event, and group.
Write digital case notes after each additional interaction with member or collateral contact (phone call, email, etc.).
Write monthly summaries for SDH enrolled individuals on your caseload (approximately 15 members).
Write social goal progress reviews 2 times annually for identified caseload.
Clinical / Direct Practice
Co-facilitate all Saturday HFM social outings.
Co-facilitate “Let’s Hang Out” or Hang Out social skills groups.
Support members in defining their friendship goals and support members in attaining these goals. Use a baseline information-gathering sheet to track responses and re-visit periodically during the year.
Guide Social Solutions discussion incorporating member transparency (“What helps me be my best self?”), practice identifying the issue, encouraging check ins, and perspective-taking.
Provide validation calls to members after social skills group or events, as needed.
Co-facilitate psycho-educational or social capital groups each during the winter/spring time for 8-12 HFM members open to all levels.
Facilitate small social capital break-out groups 2 times monthly (starting in October) with 2-6 members based on member-identified interests.
As needed, develop curriculum for psycho-educational or social capital groups.
Provide brief therapy-style social coaching for HFM members on an as-needed basis over the phone or in-person (e.g., concrete social skills, social skills refresher, finding social solutions, triangulated friends, progress towards social goals, etc.).
Facilitate ongoing social relationship development among program members while at the events and in-between via phone calls, emails, and face-to-face interaction.
Attend ISP meetings (as needed) to support coordinate of care for members as well as discussions of progress towards social goals.
Hold 1:1 and small group coaching sessions with members. Adhere to established coaching session protocol. Work with Social Worker to integrate clinical approaches.
Enhancing Social Capital & Communication
Monitor HFM’s incoming email as well as the HFM telephone line to coordinate communication and logistics with members as needed.
Develop newsletter sent to HFM members quarterly inclusive of social suggestions for community outings.
Further develop social media presence via web design, video, and Facebook.
Help members identify organic opportunities in their own community to connect with others and foster social capital outside of HFM.
Co-facilitate or organize a social capital group during the social year.
Facilitate small social capital break-out groups 2 times monthly (starting in October) with 2-6 members based on member-identified interests.
Coordination & Project Management
Coordinate and organize preparation prior to Saturday social outings as well as any social outing follow-up needed, including mailing letters for missed outings.
Facilitate thank-you card writing to vendors after events and community integrated activities (when applicable).
Oversee at least one HFM project selected based on academic goals to further improve the program. Meet with HFM team to report progress and troubleshoot hurdles.
This is an unpaid internship opportunity that is only open to current students. The internship may be able to satisfy course credit if approved by the student's institution of learning.
