Your main responsibilities
As Senior Legal Counsel and regional commercial lead for Western Canada, you will act as the primary legal business partner to Englobe’s Western Canadian operations and oversee the delivery of commercial legal services across the region. In this role, you will work closely with regional senior leadership, operational teams, and members of the Legal Affairs team to support business growth, promote effective risk allocation, and ensure compliance with Englobe’s governance framework and risk tolerance.
You will also serve as Englobe’s principal legal resource for privacy and data governance matters, supporting the organisation across all regions on these topics.
Your main responsibilities will include:
Lead the delivery of commercial legal services to Englobe's operations in Western Canada and serve as the principal legal contact for regional senior leadership.
Review, negotiate, and draft complex commercial agreements, including client contracts, RFPs and standing offers, MSAs, subconsultant agreements, and joint venture and teaming arrangements.
Support major pursuits from the early bid stage through contract award, including by reviewing procurement requirements, advising on project delivery and teaming structures, and developing appropriate risk-mitigation strategies.
Advise project and operational teams throughout the project lifecycle on contract interpretation, change orders, contractual notices, payment issues, scope disputes, and other matters that may affect project performance or financial outcomes.
Participate in regional leadership meetings and internal committees, providing legal and commercial insight on strategic initiatives, major pursuits, and operational decisions.
Drive improvements to legal, contracting, and risk-management processes, including contract templates, playbooks, internal guidance, approval workflows, and practical tools for business teams.
Support corporate development activities, including legal due diligence in connection with potential acquisitions and the legal onboarding and integration of newly acquired entities.
Develop and deliver practical training to business teams on contract risk, legal compliance, contract administration, claims prevention, procurement requirements, and commercial best practices.
Act as the lead legal resource on privacy and data governance matters, in collaboration with Information Technology, Information Security and Human Resources.
Review and negotiate agreements involving data protection, privacy, and information security, including SaaS agreements, technology procurement agreements, and IT service agreements.
What makes you unique
A law degree and membership in good standing with a Canadian law society.
Approximately 10 to 15 years of relevant post-call experience, gained in private practice, an in-house legal department, or a combination of both.
Extensive experience reviewing, drafting, and negotiating complex commercial agreements.
Prior in-house experience, preferably within an engineering, construction, infrastructure, environmental consulting, or other professional services organization.
Strong knowledge of the legal and commercial risks associated with engineering, construction, and infrastructure projects, including procurement, project delivery, subcontracting, joint ventures, claims, change orders, and contract administration.
Experience with privacy, data governance, technology agreements, or information security matters would be considered a strong asset.
Excellent judgment and the ability to identify legal and commercial risks, develop practical solutions, and provide clear, business-oriented advice.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build credibility and trusted relationships with senior leaders, operational teams, and cross-functional stakeholders.
Fluency in English is required. Bilingualism in English and French is strongly preferred.
The ability to work during Western Canadian business hours and to travel occasionally, as required. Preference will be given to candidates located in Western Canada.
