Spring 2027 Plumbing Engineering Co-Op Tampa
Application Deadline: 2 October 2026
Department: Early Career
Employment Type: Internship
Location: Tampa, FL
Description
Ready for experience that moves your engineering career forward?
You're a Mechanical or Architectural Engineering student seeking a Co-Op opportunity where you can gain hands-on experience supporting real design projects that make a difference.
You're interested in how plumbing systems are designed and integrated, learning about domestic water, sanitary and storm systems, medical gas, and specialty piping while seeing how these systems support complex facilities.
You enjoy problem-solving and learning through doing, whether that means assisting with system layouts, calculations, equipment selection, drawing reviews, or coordination with other disciplines.
You're organized, detail-oriented, and eager to learn from experienced engineers who value collaboration, mentorship, and thoughtful design.
You're not just completing a Co-Op requirement, you're looking for meaningful experience, professional growth, and a strong foundation for a future career in plumbing.
At HEAPY, Plumbing Engineering Co‑Ops are active contributors to the team. You’ll support healthcare-focused projects, gain exposure to industry standards and codes, and build practical skills that extend well beyond the classroom. If learning, growing, and helping design environments that truly matter sounds like the right next step, this could be the opportunity for you.
Please submit only one application to your preferred location.
Key Responsibilities
The Plumbing Engineering Co-Op performs a variety of assignments involving the application of foundational plumbing engineering principles for HEAPY projects. This role supports the design and analysis of plumbing systems within the built environment while developing both technical and professional skills. The Co-Op contributes to project teams through design support, documentation, and collaboration under the guidance of experienced colleagues, with exposure to fire suppression systems as applicable.
Qualifications
Candidates should be currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Architectural Engineering, or a related AEC field from an ABET‑accredited (or equivalent accredited) program. The role requires the ability to work full-time (40 hours per week) for the duration of a semester and legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship. Successful candidates demonstrate strong problem‑solving and critical thinking skills, along with excellent attention to detail and a commitment to high‑quality work. Effective verbal and written communication skills are essential, as is the ability to collaborate in a team environment. Familiarity with the Microsoft Office Suite is expected, and exposure to AutoCAD, Revit, or similar design software is preferred but not required.
Duties & Responsibilities
Develops and applies foundational plumbing engineering knowledge within the built environment.
Supports project teams with system layouts, basic calculations, and design documentation.
Learns and utilizes design tools such as AutoCAD MEP and/or Revit MEP.
Ensures accuracy in design inputs while building understanding of plumbing and basic fire suppression systems.
Gathers and organizes information for use in design specifications and reports.
Collaborates with colleagues to support project deliverables and meet deadlines.
Participates in field observations to connect design with real-world installations.
Engages in continuous learning through training, mentorship, and hands-on experience.
