Position Purpose: The Field Conservation Project Lead is providing assistance and support to the Acting Supervisor of Species Recovery and Species Recovery Coordinator with various conservation projects, including preparing and organizing outreach materials, data analysis, and report writing. This position will assist and provide support in implementing the Strategic Plan.
Project Description: Post-release monitoring lead. This position will lead the collection and organization of post-release monitoring data for Blanding's turtles as part of the Zoo's head starting program. Primary activities include contributing to planning of, and participating in, field data collection; inputting and reviewing field data; and associated tasks. Post-release monitoring fieldwork includes handling turtles, recording biometrics, radio telemetry, turtle trapping, observation surveys, nesting surveys, and supporting Field Technicians. May contribute to husbandry and release day planning as required.
Core Role Responsibilities:
Assists with various conservation projects as directed by the Acting Supervisor. Conducts research, compiles and analyzes research data and reports on results.
Assists with the program resources and educational materials related to the conservation program.
Delivers public outreach such as presentations and workshops.
Assists with funding and preparing grant proposals and reporting.
Assist with report writing.
Provides regular updates to the Supervisor.
Follows all policies and branch instructions.
Attends appropriate training as required.
Technical Knowledge and Skills:
Must have a post-secondary diploma or degree related to the field, minimum of 2 years completed or the equivalent amount of training and related experience.
Must have 1 years of proven experience in the same or similar position working independently to plan and implement safe and effective conservation projects and data collection).
Must have proven, strong organizational skills.
Well-developed interpersonal skills, along with strong communications skills.
Working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS legislation an asset.
Must be knowledgeable in the use of computerized programs and systems.
Must be able to work weekends, shifts and holidays as scheduled.
Must be able to deal with staff and public in a courteous and efficient manner.
Capable of meeting the physical requirements of the position.
