The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH), operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking compassionate and skilled Registered Nurses (RNs) to join our Medical Intermediate Care Unit (MICU) at our Jamaica Plain campus. This is a unique opportunity to provide high-acuity care in a dynamic, mission-driven environment. As a vital member of our interdisciplinary healthcare team, the RN will deliver comprehensive nursing care to critically ill patients, including perioperative and post-anesthesia care. The role involves clinical decision-making, delegation, and coordination of care in alignment with performance improvement principles, hospital standards, and regulatory requirements. Under the guidance of the Nurse Manager, the RN will help ensure the highest standards of patient-centered care for individuals from diverse communities and referral sources.
Please note: All shifts require working every other weekend, days off are assigned
Day Shift - 7 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Evening Shift - 3:00 p.m. - 11:30 p.m.
Night Shift - 11:15 p.m. - 7:15 a.m.
Duties and Responsibilities (These duties and responsibilities are not all inclusive):
Serves as team leader in the absence of the Nurse Manager, assigning, supervising, and evaluating perioperative nursing care provided by RNs, LPNs, NAs, and support staff.
Ensures nursing care is delivered according to established standards, with ongoing documentation for patients from the community and referral agencies under the direction of the Nurse Manager or Charge Nurse.
Initiates physical, psychosocial, and spiritual assessments of patients' nursing care needs in accordance with admission procedures and unit policy.
Develops a Plan of Care in collaboration with the patient, their significant others, the multidisciplinary healthcare team, and other resources, based on data analysis.
Implements and documents nursing interventions in alignment with the Plan of Care, nursing theory, hospital and unit policies, and regulatory requirements.
Accurately transcribes physician orders for medications, tests, and interventions; administers prescribed medications and monitors/document responses, including adverse or toxic effects.
Continuously assesses and evaluates patient status to determine the effectiveness of interventions and treatment outcomes, and responds to significant changes in condition.
Documents the nursing care process, outcomes, and situational occurrences in accordance with hospital and unit policies and procedures.
Identifies and provides education and training to patients and their significant others to support improved health outcomes, recovery, and understanding of ongoing care needs.
Performs charge nurse duties as delegated by the Nurse Manager, ensuring organized and consistent delivery of care.
Participates in departmental and hospital-wide performance improvement and risk management activities, including data collection, analysis, and implementation of improvement strategies.
Demonstrates competence in providing age-appropriate care and remains sensitive to the cultural and spiritual needs of all patients.
Required Qualifications:
Knowledge of scientific theories and principles of nursing in medical/surgical and critical care environments
Ability to identify symptoms of mental illness and emotional disorders
Strong oral and written communication skills for effective collaboration with providers, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary teams
Ability to remain composed, make sound decisions, and respond swiftly in high-pressure or emergency situations
Demonstrated ability to build rapport and interact respectfully with individuals from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds
Capacity to coordinate team efforts and achieve shared objectives
Familiarity with supervisory principles and practices
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated knowledge of nursing practices in critical care settings
Experience using the Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment (CIWA) scale to assess patients and administer appropriate medication
Ability to prioritize and adapt quickly in emergency and high-acuity situations
About the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital:
Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital’s services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.
Located in the heart of Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients.
The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility, and (B) six months of which must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.
Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate’s years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division’s Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range.
