The Recruitment and Admissions (R&A) unit at the UBC Sauder School of Business plays an integral role in the achievement of the UBC Sauder’s commitment to attract, engage and retain students who represent diverse perspectives, experiences and identities (UBC Sauder Strategic Plan) by recruiting well-qualified, high-performing, community-minded, and diverse domestic and international students to meet the school’s enrolment targets and goals.
The Manager, Admissions is a champion for student access and success, guiding prospective students through a pivotal life decision while providing operational leadership and strategic management of the admissions processes, workflows, and systems that attract and yield high-caliber, diverse students to UBC Sauder's programs, and support the strategic initiatives and goals of the unit and the school.
Organizational Status Reports to the Associate Director, Admissions. Works closely and collaboratively with R&A leadership team, colleagues within UBC Sauder and across UBC, including faculty members, Division Chairs, Enrolment Services, Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, other faculty advising offices, International Student Initiatives, International Student Advising, Student Housing, Student Athlete Services, and the First Nations House of Learning to meet the goals and objectives of the unit and the school.
Work Performed
Admissions Operations and Process Management
Leads a high-quality, student-centered admissions experience across all programs, providing operational leadership over admissions processes and workflows, including data analysis, team priority-setting, application evaluation, and admissions committee management, to ensure prospective students receive timely, accurate, and equitable decisions and guidance throughout their application journey.
Manages a team of Senior Admissions Officers, admissions file evaluators and interviewers. Hires, trains, assigns work, and coaches on service standards, inclusive communication, privacy, and bias-aware evaluation, ensuring applicants receive consistent guidance and decisions.
As a member of the admissions committee, reviews and evaluates complex application files, conducts interviews with applicants, and participates in admissions decisions with a focus on documented rationale, policy-aligned discretion, and clear communication to applicants.
Adjudicates student records, requests for late applications, refunds, and consideration of unofficial documentation. Conducts complex evaluations of Canadian and international transcripts, serving as an expert resource for credential assessment.
Investigates and resolves complex, often sensitive, problems relating to admissibility, recognition of prior education and institutions, availability of transcripts, and University regulations. Responds to high-level administrative complaints and escalated student issues.
Working closely with the Associate Director, Admissions, creates admissions policies and procedures that foster Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and sets the admissions requirements. Conducts research on best practices in post-secondary admissions to make appropriate policy and practices recommendations.
Maintains comprehensive knowledge of all University Senate regulations and policies as they affect admission policy.
Develops admissions content for the UBC Calendar and coordinates required approvals.
Maintains contact with other post-secondary institutions in BC and across Canada, external higher education organizations and standardized testing institutions, and other relevant bodies to stay current on testing standards, assessment methodologies, and industry developments that impact admissions evaluation.
Student Advising and Support
Serves as a trusted advisor to prospective students, families, and counselors, providing compassionate, expert guidance on unfavourable decisions, appeal processes, alternate pathways, and educational options that keep students' long-term goals in view.
Exercises professional judgment in assessing special and extenuating circumstances, resolving complex admission matters and making decisions that are legally binding on UBC.
Advises prospective students, parents, staff, educators, and the public about current admission requirements, changing policies, prerequisite studies, transfer credit, program availability, alternative educational options and across all areas of student finances.
Information Systems, Data Analysis and Reporting
Leverages data and analytics to identify barriers to access, evaluate the applicant experience, and drive continuous improvement. Monitors decision turnaround times, communication touchpoints, appeal volumes and outcomes, and equity indicators to identify trends and inform operational and service enhancements.
Manages, recommends and implements enhancements to admissions and CRM systems. Partners with Sauder BTMO, UBC IT, and external vendors to align technology solutions with operational requirements, strategic priorities, and service excellence objectives.
Leads the development of operational analytics and reporting frameworks, conducting advanced data analysis to evaluate admission criteria and evaluation processes. Generates evidence-based insights and trend analyses that inform policy review, strategic decision-making, and operational improvements.
Develops reports to support recruiting, program promotion efforts, and management of the matriculation process.
Evaluates and responds to external data requests in consultation with the Directors and Assistant Dean. Analyzes data and prepares comprehensive admissions data reports and summaries for internal and external accreditation and external program rankings and publications.
Manages the integrity and security of admissions data and admissions systems.
Acts as a resource person to the R&A team on all admissions systems and processes, determining the need, developing and providing training, support, and oversight.
Analyzes scholarship data and criteria and makes recommendations to maximize impact and yield.
Manages reconciliation of all program tuition deposits, administrative fees and scholarship funds.
Cross-Campus Collaboration
Builds and sustains partnerships across UBC's student services ecosystem, including Housing, International Student Advising, Student Athlete Services, and the First Nations House of Learning, to ensure admissions processes connect seamlessly to students' broader experience at UBC Sauder.
Contributes directly to the development of operational priorities and strategic initiatives for the unit.
Represents UBC Sauder at relevant committees at the university or on external organizations that facilitate the goals of the unit.
Assumes responsibility for special projects assigned by the Associate Director, Directors, Assistant Dean or the Dean's office.
Provides essential back-up coverage for the Associate Director, Admissions and performs other duties within the classification of the role as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement This role makes recommendations and decisions regarding the management and effective delivery of student admissions activities to ensure enrolment objectives are met. Applies expert-level knowledge and understanding of complex admission and program requirements and policies. Poor decision-making or judgment would compromise the integrity of the UBC Sauder programs as well as jeopardize the reputation of the school and the university. Errors in judgment may directly harm individual students, affecting their access to education, financial planning, and life decisions, as well as negatively impact the school's reputation and ability to enroll a high-caliber, diverse student body. Failure to provide sound decisions could result in a loss of confidence of UBC Sauder and undermine the Dean’s efforts to raise the UBC Sauder’s global ranking and reputation to ensure sustained access to resources and success in the long run.
Supervision Received Reports to the Associate Director, Admissions. Works with considerable autonomy while maintaining alignment with strategic directives.
Supervision Given Supervises Senior Admissions Officers and contractors. May assume supervisory responsibilities for special projects involving staff not directly reporting to this position.
Minimum Qualifications Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three to four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
