SUMMARY: With supervision, coordinates educational programs for a designated group of academic students with visual impairment.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Essential Functions:
Teaches visually impaired students with multiple disabilities on an individual and group basis.
Instructs in core curriculum, expanded core, life skills, and self-care areas.
Facilitates and participates in the development, review and evaluation of individualized educational program which may require the ability to observe and respond to a variety of environmental stimuli.
Conducts evaluations and assessments to determine child's developmental status, academics status, and mastery of Maryland grade level curriculum standards.
Participates in interdisciplinary team meetings, IEP meetings, staff meetings, and other school and student meetings as needed.
Plans and/or chaperones on and off-campus activities, appointments, programs and field trips
May require the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and push or pull in excess of 100 lbs. unassisted.
Manages classroom resources.
Coordinates data collection and recording.
Marginal Functions:
Plans and participates in on and off-campus student activities.
Performs additional duties as assigned
CONDITIONS:
Equipment Used: Augmentative communication Devices, copy machine, computer, various adaptive and orthopedic equipment and telephone.
Performance Standard: Must assure 100% commitment to the integration, coordination, and implementation of student programs, and compliance with health and safety standards.
Work Environment: Multiple indoor and outdoor environments with varying sound, lighting and temperature conditions. Maybe exposed to various conditions when providing direct care to students.
Work Schedule: 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch period. This position follows a 11 month school schedule. Additional hours or flex schedule may be required.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, skills and general abilities:
Comprehensive knowledge of special education principles, practices, and procedures, including developing and writing IEP's and performing appropriate teaching techniques.
Minimum of Bachelor's degree and ability to meet MSDE certification with an endorsement in Vision PREFERRED and special education REQUIRED.
General knowledge of visual impairment, including causes, manifestations and adaptations.
General knowledge of medical disorders such as seizures or restrictions; alternate modes of communication; feeding techniques and orthopedic impairment/handling and positioning.
General knowledge of core and expanded core curriculum, program development, classroom resource management, and student/personnel scheduling.
Ability to push and pull in excess of 100 pounds and ability to lift in excess of 50 pounds with assistance.

The mission of the Maryland School for the Blind is to serve students with blindness or low vision of all abilities from birth through 21 throughout their educational journey.
Our on-campus school serves students in pre-k through high school.
We serve over 1500 students statewide.
MSB’s Statewide Outreach Services offer expertise and specialized skills to Maryland students, from birth to age 21, with visual impairment and additional disabilities, their families, and local school system staff through various programs and services.
MSB’s Outreach staff consist of highly qualified Teachers of the Visually Impaired, Orientation and Mobility Specialists, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, highly trained paraeducators, a Certified Low Vision Specialist, a doctorate-level Psychologist, and a Parent Coordinator.

Training programs for professionals and community partners
MSB offers two additional statewide services in partnership with the Maryland State Department of Education. Staff who provide these services work closely with MSB’s Outreach programs to promote student success and independence in their local school systems. MSB houses the MIRC, a braille book repository that provides adapted instructional materials for visually impaired students delivered directly to every public school in Maryland
