POSITION SUMMARY
The Training and Career Counsellor supports Métis people by using a client-centered approach to identify strengths, skills and abilities, and address barriers to employment. The Counsellor plays a key role in guiding Métis people through training and education upgrades that lead to rewarding and sustainable careers. The Counsellor provides comprehensive support to students in their job search efforts, provides coaching on various aspects of the job search such as resume and cover letter writing, interview preparation, and referrals to businesses. The Counsellor also gathers and shares labor market information within Chartered Communities, striving to enhance labor market access for Métis individuals. Furthermore, the Counsellor responds to inquiries, contributes to communications content, generates reports, and maintains accurate student records.
Duties and Responsibilities
General
Conducts formal needs assessments, including assessment of skills, education, experience, employment readiness, job search skills, and life and social skills; identifies barriers, makes appropriate referrals, and develops best next steps towards sustainable employment.
Creates and processes client funding requests and submits for approval to Regional Program Manager. • Guides students to resources to assist them in meeting admission needs.
Provides ongoing in-person and virtual support to maximize successful completion of STEPS programs.
Develops and monitors budgets for Skills Training, Employment and Post-Secondary (STEPS) training initiatives.
Administers, monitors, and tracks financial supports and services, per STEPS program guidelines, for each client.
Sources suppliers, vendors, and service providers that can help deliver the required training and education to MNBC clients.
Coordinate program budget and client needs amongst regional team. Must coordinate efforts of administrative assistant and their own to ensure client's needs are most appropriately met prior to sending for approval.
Provides great customer service to citizens and community.
Host STEPS info sessions and have a presence in community to be accessible to citizens.
Develops and maintains partnerships and relationships with suppliers, vendors, and service providers.
Responds to telephone, in-person, or electronic inquiries.
Contributes to the creation of relevant communications content, in collaboration with the Communications Team.
Prepares a variety of reports.
Maintains student files and records, ensuring completion and accuracy.
Job Placement and Wage Subsidy Support
Works with students on all aspects of the job search, including effective job search, resume and cover letter writing, interview best practices, and referrals to industry and community businesses.
Guides students to resources to assist them in meeting their job-search needs.
Works with employers to complete necessary application and processes to implement wage subsidy.
Coordinates with Provincial Employer Relations Manager to optimize the matching of qualified Métis talent with employment and wage subsidies.
Provides thorough on-the-job coaching and follow-up support to clients and employers, ensuring maximum success in reaching sustained employment.
Collects and disseminates labour-market information in Chartered Communities and makes recommendations for increasing access for Métis people to the labour market.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
Participates in committees and project teams as required.
Undertakes related duties as assigned, consistent with the job grade of the position.
Other duties may be assigned as needed to ensure the efficient operation of MNBC.
Regular/ occasional attendance at meetings/ events that may require work and travel outside of normal business hours.

Qualifications
Diploma in psychology, social work, education, human resources or, a related field from a recognized, post-secondary institution.
Minimum one (1) year of progressive work-related experience in employment counselling or similar role, including assessing client needs and delivering customized employment, job coaching, and job development services.
Career Development Practitioner Certificate would be considered an asset.
A combination of relevant experience, education, and training will be considered.
Competent assessment skills utilizing a comprehensive model, appropriate to the client’s needs.
Demonstrated ability to write and format current industry-standard resumes and cover letters.
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
Strong links to the business community with a knowledge of the local labour market, an asset.
Experience working with a client management platform, an asset.
Demonstrated ability to lead, problem solve and make decisions.
Proven ability to utilize strong interpersonal skills to deal with others effectively.
Proven ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and work with minimal supervision.
Proven ability to utilize, adapt and embrace new technologies, including Office 365 and other database/software required by the role.
Knowledge and/or awareness of the historical and contemporary contributions made by Métis people in B.C.
Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a Class 5 driver’s licence may be required.
The position may require the completion of a Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
