Build SysML models and analytical solutions shaping national systems
Collaborate with experts to deliver impactful, cross-sector outcomes
About CSIRO
As Australia's national science agency, CSIRO is solving the greatest challenges through innovative science and technology. Many of our iconic innovations were once considered impossible until someone, just like you, joined us and took on the challenge.
The National Energy Analysis Centre (NEAC) is a CSIRO-led, next-generation digital research infrastructure that will drive and inform Australia's energy transition to net zero. NEAC offers a systems-science approach, combining technical data with human behaviour insights to support faster, smarter energy innovation. It connects real people, physical test facilities, and sophisticated modelling to support researchers, innovators, and policymakers in shaping the energy landscape of the future.
NEAC includes:
The Living Lab – a real-world data network of homes, businesses and energy users
The Systems Science Toolbox – a comprehensive model suite for Australia's entire energy system
Physical Infrastructure Integration – connections to CSIRO facilities for testing and simulation
The opportunity
As a Senior Systems Engineer in NEAC, you will play a central role in the development and application of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) to support Australia’s energy transition. Linking your knowledge of applied mathematics, engineering physics, modelling and computing with real-world energy transition challenges, you will co-operate with a diverse cross-disciplinary team to develop MBSE-based capabilities and applications that can deliver meaningful value to government, industry and communities across Australia.
If you have a desire to bring your strong systems engineering and analytical skills to a collaborative and innovative team and support the energy transition, we look forward to hearing from you!
Your high-level duties will include:
Translate multiple stakeholder perspectives into formal requirements in SysML
Develop SysML models of parts of the Australian energy system aligned with NEAC’s reference architecture and application priorities
Develop scientific computing software realising a range of analytical workflows
Collaborate with NEAC leadership, CSIRO scientists, and the NEAC development team to create and deliver NEAC’s capability roadmap and project priorities
Coach and support colleagues in the application of modern systems engineering at CSIRO and act as a conduit to the wider systems engineering community
Adhere to the spirit and practice of CSIRO’s Values, Health, Safety and Environment plans and policies, diversity initiatives and Zero Harm goals
Role particulars
Location and office arrangements: Flexible – Newcastle, Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane. Other locations with a CSIRO Energy presence may be considered.
Salary: AU$135k – AU$158k per annum (pro rata for part-time), plus 15.4% superannuation
Tenure & work schedule: Specified term of 3 years; Full time.
Reference: 103296
As the successful candidate, you will bring:
Essential
A university degree in Systems Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, Operations Research, or a closely related field, and at least 5 years of practical industry or research experience
An excellent understanding of MBSE and systems architecture using SysML
Strong computational skills in one or more scientific computing languages (e.g., Python, Julia, R, MATLAB, etc.)
Knowledge of how to model and solve constrained optimisation programs in a scientific computing environment (e.g., linear, quadratic, and integer programming; JuMP, GAMS, Pyomo)
The ability to communicate and work collaboratively within a customer-focused, inter-disciplinary team, supporting team priorities in a dynamic and innovative operational environment
Desirable
Experience with SysML modelling software (e.g., CATIA, IBM Rhapsody, Tom Sawyer)
Experience with team-based software development and distributed version control (e.g., Git)
Computational experience in data analytics projects that make use of large datasets and/or complex data pipelines
Familiarity with power systems, other energy systems, supply chains, and/or transport
