Are you a skilled, practical problem-solver who enjoys working with tools and keeping facilities running safely and smoothly? The City of Edmonton is looking for a proactive and detail-oriented Maintenance Repair Person 1 to join our Parks and Roads Services team! In this hands-on role, you will be the go-to person for keeping our operational buildings, yards, and small equipment in top-notch shape. You’ll be working alongside a supportive, collaborative crew while independently tackling a dynamic blend of carpentry, routine plumbing, preventative maintenance, and yard upkeep. If you take pride in creating safe, functional environments that directly support City services, we’d love to welcome your expertise to our team!
What will you do?
Perform routine repair, alteration, and maintenance tasks on operational facilities and yards, including fences, doors, hardware, painting walls, and basic plumbing or heating fixes
Execute rough carpentry work to assist in building, repairing, and altering items such as fences, signage, railings, sheds and other facility items
Conduct basic maintenance and servicing on small operational equipment (e.g., tampers, saws, blowers) and hand tools

Assist with yard duties, inventory/stores tasks, loading, receiving, delivering stock/materials, and winter snow and ice clearing around the yards
Operate light trucks to transport equipment, inventory, and materials to and from job sites safely
Provide helpful customer service and communicate clearly with crew members, internal teams, contractors, and engagement participants
Recognize when complex repairs (e.g., specialized electrical or major plumbing work) fall outside the role's scope and coordinate with external specialized trades and internal groups to schedule service
Completion of Grade 10
One year of experience in performing general building maintenance and repairs, combined with yard work experience
Asset:
Registered Apprentice Certificates in a relevant trade
Skills required for success:
Practical facility maintenance and repair craftsmanship, using hand tools, power tools, and basic equipment to complete rough carpentry, hardware repairs, surface painting, and minor plumbing or heating upkeep safely and effectively
A rigorous safety mindset and compliance with safe work practices, hazard identification, and safety data sheets (SDS) to perform job hazard assessments, use personal protective equipment (PPE), and ensure site safety and environmental standards
Strong organizing and work prioritization skills to balance, schedule, and prioritize daily and weekly work order requests in a fast-paced environment with shifting operational demands
Efficient inventory control and stores management abilities to accurately track, receive, stock, and deliver supplies, equipment, and materials using standardized requisitioning and inventory systems
Hands-on equipment care and maintenance aptitude for inspecting, troubleshooting, servicing, and maintaining small equipment, machinery, and hand tools to extend service life and prevent downtime
Technical judgment and scope recognition to evaluate maintenance issues accurately, determine safe repair methods, and know when to escalate complex work to specialized certified trades
Collaborative teamwork and clear communication skills to work effectively with team leaders, coach less experienced crew members, and maintain professional communication with collaborators and internal staff
Experience in stores/inventory operations, SAP software, and Google Workspace applications
Familiarity with purchasing, requisitioning, and inventory control procedures

Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toe boots, gloves, safety glasses, and coveralls
