Job Description
Hey, g'day, mabuhay, kia ora, 你好, hallo, vítejte!
Thanks for stopping by. We know job hunting can be a little time-consuming and you're probably keen to find out what's on offer, so we'll get straight to the point.
Where and how you can work
Our flagship office is in Sydney, Australia, but we've made our way from down under, to our hubs in San Francisco and Austin, which is now home to our US operations. We offer flexibility in how and where you work. We trust our Canvanauts to choose the balance that empowers them and their team to achieve their goals.
About the team
Our Tax team’s mission is to modernise a traditional tax cost centre into “Tax-as-a-Partner” to ‘protect and serve’ the business, the needs of our employees, our investors, global Government and Tax Authorities where we operate, and ultimately the users of Canva’s amazing product.
Our guiding principle is to operate in a manner that reflects our core value of being a good global citizen. We’re focussed on enhancing the foundations of the Tax function as Canva enters an exciting era of operating as a Big Company! We want to do all this within a fun and engaging environment that promotes collaboration, forward thinking and continuous improvement all whilst making tax as painless as possible.
What you’ll be doing in this role
We’re seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Indirect Tax Manager to join our dynamic team. You’ll have a strong background in indirect tax compliance, accounting for indirect taxes, preparing commercially focused indirect tax advice, an aptitude for project management and utilising technology and automation. The ideal candidate will have experience in both private and public companies. You will be hands-on, responsible for overseeing the day-to-day indirect tax operations of the company in the US, Canada and Latin America, ensuring compliance, transparency and accuracy. Your expertise will play a pivotal role in ensuring that our processes and policies support the scale and complexity of a rapidly-expanding company.
At the moment, the role is focused on:
Overseeing the timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual indirect tax compliance obligations in the US, Canada and Latin America.
Delivering global accounting and reporting of indirect taxes for financial statement purposes, including reconciling and supporting any provision balances.
Assessing and mitigating indirect tax risks, providing recommendations for improvement and optimisation through the use of technology and automation to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
Driving collaboration across departments to enhance cross-functional understanding of indirect tax.
Diving into complex indirect tax technical matters to develop and implement solutions for critical business needs, drafting position papers and being a key point of contact for indirect tax matters within your scope of responsibility.
Supporting the development and implementation of indirect tax strategies that align with business objectives
Taking your continuous learning style to the next level as you plunge into the ever changing indirect tax developments around the world to help identify and address impacts to Canva.
You’re probably a match if you have:
Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive momentum across critical projects
An eye for detail, with excellent analytical, problem-solving and organisational skills
Proven experience in US sales and use tax compliance, technical advisory (including digital services tax) and driving strategies from MVP to high fidelity solutions. Experience with Canadian and LATAM indirect taxes would be a bonus.
The ability to work independently to develop and drive projects and compliance to completion as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
Implemented AI into your day-to-day ways of working in your current role and are already thinking about new ways that AI can amplify your impact
Proficiency in financial softwares and systems; experience with Netsuite and Fonoa would be a valued asset!
What's in it for you?
At Canva we value fairness, and we strive to provide competitive, market-informed compensation whilst ensuring internal equity within the team in each region. We make hiring decisions based on your skills, experience and our overall assessment of what we observed and learnt in the hiring process. The target salary range for this position is $166,000 - $245,000. When calculating offers, we make salary decisions based on market data and candidates' skills and experience.
Achieving our crazy big goals motivates us to work hard - and we do - but you'll experience lots of moments of magic, connectivity and fun woven throughout life at Canva, too. We also offer a stack of benefits to set you up for every success in and outside of work.
Here's a taste of what's on offer:

Health benefits plans to support you and your wellbeing
401(k) retirement plan with company contribution
Inclusive parental leave policy that supports all parents & carers
An annual Vibe & Thrive allowance to support your wellbeing, social connection, office setup & more
Flexible leave options that empower you to be a force for good, take time to recharge and supports you personally
Other stuff to know
We celebrate all types of skills and backgrounds at Canva so even if you don’t feel like your skills quite match what’s listed above - we still want to hear from you!
When you apply, please tell us the pronouns you use and any reasonable adjustments you may need during the interview process. Please note that interviews are conducted virtually.
We're a global online visual communications platform on a mission to empower the world to design. Featuring a simple drag-and-drop user interface and a vast range of templates ranging from presentations, documents, websites, social media graphics, posters, apparel to videos, plus a huge library of fonts, stock photography, illustrations, video footage, and audio clips, anyone can take an idea and create something beautiful on Canva on any device, from anywhere in the world.
Since our launch in 2013, we’ve had the crazy big goal of making design accessible to everyone. We were founded on the belief that people shouldn't need to understand complex software to unlock their creativity. We’re leveling the playing field and democratizing access to design and visual communication by empowering 100% of the world to communicate in a way that was once limited to the 1%.
We've always had a deeper mission surrounding Canva — which we talk about as our 'simple' two-step plan: to build one of the world’s most valuable companies, and to do the most good we possibly can. We're committed to our core value of Being a Force for Good, so as the value of our company grows, so too does our ability to have a positive impact on the world.
