Unaccredited Anaesthetic and Perioperative Medicine Registrar (HAT)
This is a fixed-term, full-time position for 12 months, commencing 1 February 2027.

Four years plus of post-graduate experience, including 6 months of intensive care, 3 months of emergency medicine, surgery, and anaesthesia.
Enthusiasm to participate in the clinical and academic activities of the department.
An interest in the oncology patient
An interest in the delivery of high-quality post-operative care delivered through our Enhanced Postoperative Care unit (EPOC), locally referred to as ECU, and our inpatient wards
An interest in driving down surgical complications
An interest in resuscitation and critical care

A twelve-month position is available to prospective anaesthetic trainees seeking broad clinical experience within a specialist medical and surgical oncology centre. Over the course of the 12-months, successful candidates will spend approximately one-third of their time in the operating theatre, working under the supervision of consultant anaesthetists and fellows; one-third in perioperative/pain medicine; and one-third of their time in perioperative and resuscitation medicine. This position is based within the Department of Anaesthesia, Perioperative Medicine, and Pain Medicine at Australia’s premier oncology hospital. This position offers an excellent opportunity to establish and develop skills in anaesthesia, acute pain management, peri-operative medicine and resuscitation within a friendly, supportive, and research- focused department. This position is closely aligned and rostered with similar positions tailored towards an intensive care stream, providing a rich multidisciplinary learning environment and strong exposure to high-acuity perioperative care.

Key Accountabilities
1. Gain experience in the areas of Oncological Acute Medicine, Enhanced Care (EPOC), & Anaesthetics for the range of Oncology Surgery
Gain experience in providing the highest standard of patient focused, evidence-based care for patients undergoing medical or surgical treatment for the variety of cancers, under the supervision of Intensive Care Specialists, Specialist Anaesthetists and Acute Medical Physicians.
Supervised provision of anaesthesia across a wide range of surgical specialities, including major head and neck, often involving complex airway management; major colorectal, upper gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, and retroperitoneal sarcoma surgery; major reconstructive surgery; melanoma and skin cancer surgery with general plastics; robotic surgery including colorectal, urology, head and neck procedures; breast surgery with reconstruction; and brachytherapy.
Voluntary attendance at peri-operative medicine clinics, including Shared Decision Making (SDM) and cardio-pulmonary exercise testing (CPET) clinics.
Supervised provision of procedural sedation procedures, both within and outside the operating theatre environment.
Supervised intensive care support for a broad range of oncology patients, including surgical and medical patients awaiting transfer to The Royal Melbourne Hospital ICU or retrieval services.
Participation in tracheostomy ward rounds.
Attendance at Rapid Response calls, cardiac arrest and Code Grey calls, including support for paediatric resuscitation in collaboration with The Royal Children’s team overseeing radiotherapy at PMCC.
Critical care transfer
Liaison with all multidisciplinary professional groups to support the delivery of holistic, patient-centred care.
Support and education of surgical and medical HMOs overnight

Participation in the on-call roster, with responsibilities for the High Acuity Service, supported by the appropriate senior registrar, fellow, and consultant.
