Responsibilities
The role involves performing investigative reviews of claims against the Commonwealth and supporting attorneys through witness interviews and legal document drafting. Responsibilities also include managing discovery, analyzing video and audio evidence, and assisting in trial preparation.
Requirements
Candidates must have litigation experience and a competent working knowledge of legal terminology and court procedures. A bachelor's degree or paralegal certificate is preferred, along with strong communication and organizational skills.
Position works in a varied capacity and supports division attorneys by performing initial investigative review of claims filed against the Commonwealth and client agencies, including the Virginia Department of Corrections, the Virginia Parole Board, and the Department of Juvenile Justice, conducting witness interviews, preparing drafts of legal documents and memoranda for attorney review, maintaining document and file control, gathering relevant documents and video footage to include review and analysis of video footage and audio recordings, assisting in all phases of discovery and working with attorneys to handle electronic discovery, and assisting in trial preparation.
Minimum Qualifications
Competent working knowledge of legal terminology, and court procedures.
Position requires excellent written communication skills, as demonstrated in a writing sample (no page length requirement).
Successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional verbal communication skills, organizational skills, proficiency in time management, the ability to work independently and as a team member, and the ability to organize and analyze large quantities of written and verbal information.
Candidate must also demonstrate the ability to work well under pressure and adjust priorities without close supervision.
Litigation experience is required.
Position supports itself and requires basic word processing skills.
Additional Considerations
Bachelor's degree in related field and/or Paralegal Certificate is preferred; however, an equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the required qualifications may substitute for educational criteria.
Experience with Microsoft Word and E Discovery is a plus.
