About the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH):
The Indiana Department of Health’s mission is to promote, protect, and improve the health and safety of all Hoosiers so that they can reach their optimal health regardless of where they live, learn, work, or play.
Role Overview:
This position serves as the Chief of Staff for the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) and is responsible for the policy, fiscal, personnel and operational decisions for the agency. Employee is responsible for establishing priorities, determining resource requirements, developing action and/or implementation plans, and establishing short or long-term goals and strategies to achieve them. Employee serves as part of the agency executive management team and reports directly to the Commissioner.
Salary:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $120,016.00 but may be commensurate with education and work experience. Use our Compensation Calculator to view the total compensation package.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
Provides leadership, direction, and vision for strategic planning, as well as design and execution of various agency projects and initiatives;
Conducts research and prepares speeches, presentations and talking points for the Agency Head on an array of topics and for a degree of constituents & stakeholders;
Ensures information flow to and from the Agency Head’s office, via all types of venues (forums, correspondence, speeches, conferences, retreats, etc.);
Manages Agency Head’s priorities, including design and execution of projects and initiatives;
Identifies and manages teams, conducts research, and develops action plans to ensure successful implementation for a variety of INSPD projects and initiatives;
Leads budget, headcount, and metric discussions to ensure ensuring that correct priorities are measured and positioned for constant improvement;
Makes recommendations regarding ways to develop operational efficiencies and implement initiatives consistent with the strategic plan of the agency;
Reviews correspondence and drafts responses for the executive as appropriate, or forward to the appropriate person for response and/or reply;
Assists on the agency’s Senior Management Team with other Assistant Agency Heads;
Assists as a sounding board for the Agency Head on a range of issues, including organizational strategy and design issues, political questions, and agency priorities;
Recruits, selects, onboards, and trains employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development;
Sets expectations, measures progress, provides ongoing feedback, and evaluates the performance of employees. Ensures work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.

Working knowledge of all federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines which relate to human resource management;
Strong understanding of project management foundational practices and ability to implement practices;
Working knowledge of accounting and budget principles;
Ability to comprehend, analyze, interpret, and correlate technical material and make recommendations on implementation in current programs;
Ability to develop and implement new principles and policies and discern any far-reaching implications;
Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing;
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with Federal and State agencies;
Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow;
Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.
A degree is not required. However, at least 15 years of experience applying the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role may be considered.
Individuals should have the ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role may provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.
