Job Summary: Provides administrative and clinical supervision to nursing personnel on all shifts, 24/7 within their operating unit. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Leadership and Operational Oversight: 1. Assesses the overall status of the hospital and plans a course of action for the current shift and the shift immediately to follow. 2. Coordinates nursing activities with the activities of other hospital departments. 3. Provides input into goals and objectives of nursing services. 4. Periodically meets with other staff members to discuss progress towards their achievement and to develop future courses of action. 5. Clarifies and interprets hospital and nursing policies and procedures to nursing staff, physicians, patients, visitors, and personnel in various hospital departments. 6. Maintains current manuals on hospital policies and procedures; ensures they are readily available. 7. Initiates disciplinary process, as appropriate, during shift. 8. Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs, activities, and procedures which ensure the highest quality of patient care outcomes. 9. Reports and investigates significant events such as patient complaints or issues which have legal implications to the appropriate management. 10. Provides support and direction in resolving challenges, assists non-nursing operations with personnel needs such as OIM, conflict resolution, and works to escalate those needs to appropriate leadership. Staffing and Resource Management: 1. Assists the Charge Nurse in determining required staff based on patient census and acuity. 2. Assists in reviewing alternative patient assignments when staffing is limited; reassigns staff as necessary to meet changing patient care needs. 3. Assigns float personnel to areas of greatest acuity. 4. Records staffing changes on required forms and schedules. 5. Reviews daily shift staffing reports for patient census and acuity. 6. Assists in coordinating the opening or closing of patient care areas. Patient Care Coordination and Support: 1. Meets personally with family, patients and staff to resolve concerns or difficult situations. 2. Provides appropriate procedural information to patients/families who request living wills, designated power of attorney or donation of anatomical gifts. 3. Coordinates and assists in providing care to patients or visitors in emergency situations in non-patient care areas. 4. Initiates nursing rounds at regular intervals to determine changes in patient acuity and nursing unit status. 5. Prepares written documentation of bed placement, acceptance of patients and intervening factors. 6. Supports the documentation of incident reports and patient codes. 7. Furnishes a written and verbal report to oncoming supervisory personnel. 8. Facilitates the placement of patients on admission, transfer and discharge. 9. Develops plans for the arrival of patients requiring telemetry or intensive care placement. 10. Reports significant patient information, staff performance, and unit activities directly to the appropriate AOC, or Executive Backup. 11. Responds to patient codes and coordinates the notification of resource personnel. 12. Provides crisis intervention as needed. 13. Procures emergency medication, equipment, supplies, and services when urgent situations require them. Emergency and Disaster Response: 1. Coordinates the direction and physical assistance of all staff involved in heliport operations. 2. Notifies personnel when a disaster plan is to be initiated and provides appropriate direction. Communication and Reporting: 1. Posts and reports changes in the operating room schedule. 2. Reports to appropriate management and public relations representatives any newsworthy items that may impact the hospital. Education and Staff Development: 1. Assists nursing staff in priority setting, organizing care, and developing leadership skills. 2. Counsels the Charge Nurse regarding difficult or unusual patient/employee situations and assists in determining possible courses of action. 3. Functions as a resource person for new staff and orienting staff to the Charge Nurse role. 4. Identifies staff and patient educational needs based on clinical situations. 5. Assists in developing, conducting and evaluating staff in-services. 6. Uses specific bedside situations to teach staff. 7. Provides instruction to staff on nursing research principles. 8. Assists in implementing and evaluating practice modifications based on research. 9. May contribute to the core of nursing knowledge through publication and formal presentations. Minimum Required Qualifications: Education: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Bachelor's degree. Experience: Five years of Registered Nursing experience of which two years must have been in a supervisory or managerial capacity. Licensure: Must have a valid, active unencumbered Nursing license or temporary permit approved by the Georgia Licensing Board. Certifications: BLS and Healthcare Provider certifications. ACLS may be required for some locations PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: (Light 1-10 lbs): 0-33% of the work day (occasionally), negligible 34-66% of the workday (frequently), negligible 67-100% of the workday (constantly). Lifting 10 lbs max, carrying of small articles such as dockets, ledgers, files, small tools, occasional standing & walking, frequent sitting, close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks. ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Factors affecting environment conditions may vary depending on the assigned work area and tasks. Environmental exposures include, but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure, Bio-hazardous waste. chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors, communicable diseases, electrical shock , floor surfaces, hot/cold temperatures, indoor/outdoor conditions, latex, lighting patient care/handling injuries, radiation, shift work, travel may be required, use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
