About UNSW:
UNSW Medicine & Health is a national leader in learning, teaching and research, with close affiliations to several of Australia’s finest hospitals, research institutes and health care organisations. With a strong presence at UNSW Kensington campus, the faculty have staff and students in teaching hospitals in Sydney as well as regional and rural areas of NSW including Albury/Wodonga, Wagga Wagga, Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie.
Details of the role
A Research Assistant (Level 5) provides technical and research assistance to the research project. MOCS is a program from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), part of the US Department of Health and Human Services, and the UNSW research team have received funding for a project, “Quantifying fetal hypoxia using placental perfusion to make childbirth safer”. The team, across Medicine and Engineering, aim to develop a fetal monitoring system that could transform labour and delivery. For this Year 1 project, a study will be conducted of women, to gain information about placental perfusion during contractions.
This exciting opportunity will support cutting-edge maternal and fetal health research aimed at improving childbirth outcomes. You will design and conduct research experiments, analyse data, prepare weekly and monthly project reports, and contribute to research activities and stakeholder engagement. The role involves working closely with researchers, clinicians, and industry partners, including attending monthly meetings to provide project updates. You will also support high-quality research processes and contribute to the development of innovative fetal and maternal imaging technologies.
This role in particular will focus on the development and integration of the electrical systems for a new ultrasound sensor. An electrical engineering background is deal, and an understanding of ultrasound processing (especially from RF or I/Q signals) would be an advantage.
The role of Research Assistant reports to the Professor of Maternal Fetal Medicine and has no direct reports.
Some key skills required:
Relevant tertiary qualification with subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
Knowledge of research protocols, experimental design and planning as involved in developing research projects and reporting against milestones.
Support in the conceptualisation, design, and successful conduct of projects with an emphasis on the development of fetal and maternal imaging technology.
Prepare and contribute to the production of technical reports, manuscripts for publication and tenders or grants for external funding.
Manage the technical aspects of databases, including coordinating and executing data cleaning, data management processes and ensuring research integrity in research databases.
Perform quantitative/qualitative data analyses as required by the research project.
Demonstrated superior interpersonal communication skills to initiate and maintain effective stakeholder relationships whilst exercising discretion and confidentiality.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
Please refer to the position description for full details.
