Your Specific Responsibilities:

Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc.  Cleans and washes equipment.  After obtaining the required Instructional CDL permit or license, operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include, but is not limited to; dump truck, front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance.

Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.  Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.  

Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.

Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed.

The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

• Knowledge of mathematical calculations.
• Knowledge of standard safety rules and procedures.

Skills in:

• Skill in operating a variety of hand and power tools.
• Skill in operating and performing minor maintenance on small/medium equipment and vehicles.

Ability to:

• Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment.
• Ability to read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms.
• Ability to maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures.
• Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
• Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis.
• Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
• Ability to work independently.
• Ability to stand for an extended period of time.

Other Job-Related Requirements:

• Must possess a valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with air brakes at the time of hire.
• To be in compliance with the District Two Loss Prevention Procedure and be aware of reducing personal injury and vehicular accidents. While on-duty status, the position incumbent must be readily available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) consistent with the type of Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis perform other CMV safety-sensitive functions.
• The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
• Obtain Certification in Maintenance of Traffic – Intermediate Level within one year and maintains.
• This position will be required to respond before, during and following emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications:

• One year of experience in the operation of heavy equipment and possess a valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with air brakes at the time of hire.

This position requires a valid Class B driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:

1. three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation;
2. any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years;
3. a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and
4. a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years.

Your driving record will be reviewed and the status of your driver license confirmed.

In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a Commercial Driver License (CDL), applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query.
