  • Located in Parramatta with flexible working arrangements available 
  • Salary: Clerk Grade 9/10 with salary ranging from $129,464 to $142,665 + super and annual leave loading 

 

 

About the role 

 

As a Senior Accounting Policy Officer, you will drive the development, implementation and continuous improvement of financial and accounting policies, guidelines and internal control framework over financial information and systems. You will play a key role in supporting the Department’s compliance with Australian Accounting Standards, NSW Treasury policies and best practice internal control frameworks. 

 

Working closely with finance teams and stakeholders across the Department, you will provide expert technical accounting advice, identify financial reporting risks and monitor the effectiveness of controls that address those risks. You will support the delivery of high-quality financial governance frameworks that enable sound decision-making and accurate statutory reporting.

About you 

 

You are a technically strong accounting or audit professional who enjoys solving complex accounting issues and translating technical requirements into practical business solutions. You bring a strong understanding of financial reporting risks and financial internal controls, with experience in controls assurance and supporting remediation. You are confident engaging with stakeholders across a large and complex organisation. 

 

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate: 

 

  • Strong knowledge and experience interpreting and applying Australian Accounting Standards. 
  • Experience or ability to develop, implement and maintain financial-related policies, procedures and internal control frameworks.   
  • Experience evaluating the design and operating effectiveness of financial internal controls and providing practical recommendations to remediate identified gaps. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex information and provide clear advice. 
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence outcomes and build collaborative relationships. 
  • Experience working within a large, complex organisation or public sector environment in an assurance or accounting policy advisory role will be highly regarded. 

 

Key knowledge and experience 

 

  • Knowledge and experience interpreting and applying Australian accounting standards 
  • Substantial experience leading accounting policy and resource development, technical accounting, financial accounting risk identification and implementation of fit for purpose financial governance, accounting policies, processes and controls 
  • Knowledge of and commitment to implementing the Department’s Aboriginal Education Policy and upholding the Department’s Partnership Agreement with the NSW AECG and to ensure quality outcomes for Aboriginal people.

 

Essential requirements of the role 

 

  • Finance or accounting degree (or equivalent) and membership of a recognised Australian professional accounting association 
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the value of public education.
