The Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania is hiring a Publications Coordinator to serve primarily as the manager of the Jewish Quarterly Review, and also of the new Katz Center edited volume series: Conversations and Advances in Judaic Studies, both published by the University of Pennsylvania Press.
This person will work closely with the editors of the journal and book series respectively, be responsible for all aspects of coordinating the management of manuscripts and peer review, and will serve as point person for authors and reviewers; they will oversee all parts of the movement of the manuscripts into press, coordinating with Penn Press, and shepherding the stages of between submission and production. This person will also coordinate with the communications team to promote the Center’s publications through social media, blogging, and other means.
Job Description
The Herbert D. Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania is driven by the mission to deepen and broaden the understanding of Jewish history, texts, cultures, ideas, and experiences. The research it supports spans all periods of Jewish history, from distant antiquity through to the present day; it reaches into every part of the globe where Jews have lived, and it is grounded in a wide range of disciplines and approaches. Over the decades, after supporting hundreds of scholars and untold numbers of discoveries and publications, it has earned a reputation as the nation’s preeminent research center in the study of Jewish history and culture.
Responsibilities:
Coordinate the peer review and publication process for the Jewish Quarterly Review, including communications with authors, reviewers, and editors; submission review; image and permissions management; and troubleshooting of the online submission system.
Manage editorial and publication documents throughout the editing, copy editing, proofing, and publication processes, ensuring accurate version control and timely completion of deliverables.
Serve as a primary point of contact for authors, editors, reviewers, Penn Press, and other external stakeholders, responding to inquiries and coordinating communications as appropriate.
Maintain journal and publication records, including submission, publication, and contact data; prepare reports as needed; and ensure accurate and organized documentation.
Provide publication support for edited fellowship volumes, coordinating timelines and communications with editors and authors; managing images and permissions; coordinating with Penn Press; and overseeing copy edits, proofs, and final manuscript preparation.
Manage social media and publicity initiatives for the Center’s journal and Penn Press book series, including creating content for the journal blog and promoting new publications.
Qualifications:
Bachelor of Arts and 1 to 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
Experience in academic publishing and manuscript tracking softwares a plus. A Ph.D. in a humanistic field is preferred. Previous knowledge of Jewish studies is not required.
The successful candidate must be detail oriented, organized, and have excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills. Essential is good judgment and the ability to work autonomously and make independent decisions.
