What is the role?

As a Bridge CAD Designer within LEA's Structures Division, you will contribute to the design and rehabilitation of bridges and transportation structures by preparing high-quality technical drawings using CAD and other digital design tools. Working closely with engineers and project managers, you will translate design concepts into accurate, standards-compliant drawings for construction, permitting, and contract documentation. You will also assist with project delivery activities, including quantity takeoffs, cost estimates, and other technical support tasks. Your role is essential in ensuring drawing quality, design consistency, and compliance with MTO and industry standards throughout all phases of a project.

In this role, your duties and responsibilities will include:

Design & Drafting

• Prepare detailed CAD drawings and design packages for new bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and other transportation structures. This also includes rehabilitation of existing structures.
• Create and update technical drawings using AutoCAD, MicroStation, and other relevant software, in compliance with MTO standards and project requirements.
• Collaborate with engineers and project managers to translate structural design concepts into precise construction drawings and supporting documentation (such as quantities, cost estimates, schedules, etc.).
• Review and revise drawings to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to relevant codes and guidelines, including MTO and CSA standards.
• Maintain drawing databases and templates and help develop and implement CAD standards within LEA’s Bridge Sector, and across the Structures Division.

Project Coordination and Management

• Support in organizing drawing sets, maintaining CAD standards, and ensuring consistent document control throughout the design process.
• Assist with preparing quantity take-offs, construction details, and as-built drawings.
• Coordinate with other disciplines and sub-consultants to ensure alignment of structural drawings with architectural, civil, electrical, and plans from all other disciplines.
• Participate in internal design review meetings and contribute to design development discussions.

Health & Safety, and Quality Control

• Comply with all applicable health and safety policies to maintain a safe working environment.
• Report any unsafe conditions, incidents, or hazards to the direct supervisor promptly.
• Ensure quality control and assurance throughout projects, maintaining design accuracy, technical clarity, drawing readability, and compliance with design standards.

Structural Inspections

• Participate in conducting site visits, undertaking research, data collection/field reviews, data analysis, and documenting observations to support the preparation of reports for existing and proposed bridge and transportation structures.
• Support structural condition surveys and site inspections by preparing condition survey reports, developing drawings from field observations and inspection data, and assisting with rehabilitation documentation.

Professional Development

• Continuously grow professional skills and knowledge through training sessions, seminars, workshops, and involvement in professional associations to stay updated on the latest trends, software, and technology.
• Assisting with managing other related assignments within the scope of the Structures Division, which may include Transit and Building structures.

The qualifications you need:

• College degree in Structural, Civil, Construction, Construction Engineering Technology or Technician program. Programs with a focus on structural or bridge engineering will be an asset.
• 1-2 years of experience producing CAD drawings for bridge or structural engineering projects will be an asset.
• Proficiency in the efficient use of AutoCAD is required, knowledge of other tools such as Revit, Civil 3D, or MicroStation, is an asset.
• Familiarity with bridge design standards and manuals, including MTO guidelines, OPSD, and CSA codes, is an asset.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow design standards and QA/QC processes.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team in a fast-paced project environment.
• Effective communication and organizational skills are required to coordinate with engineers and team members.
• Interest in continuous learning and staying updated on CAD tools and industry best practices.
• Commitment to continuous professional development and staying updated on industry trends.

• Annual Salary Range: $65,000 – $75,000
