About CSIRO
As Australia's national science agency, CSIRO is solving the greatest challenges through innovative science and technology. Many of our iconic innovations were once considered impossible until someone, just like you, joined us and took on the challenge.
As a Carbon Capture Chemistry and Operations Technician, you’ll play a hands-on role supporting carbon capture research within CSIRO’s Carbon Capture Materials Acceleration Centre (CCMAC). You’ll work closely with scientists and engineers to prepare and test materials, operate and maintain laboratory equipment, and support the day-to-day running of experimental activities.
This is a practical, lab-based role where you’ll contribute directly to experiments, troubleshoot issues, and help keep systems and equipment running efficiently. You’ll be part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team spanning early-career researchers through to highly experienced scientists and engineers, working together to deliver real-world outcomes in carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS).
Your high-level duties will include:
Supporting CSIRO Energy objectives through hands-on experimental work within the CSIRO Carbon Capture Materials Centre (CCMAC), contributing directly to laboratory-based research, testing, and materials evaluation activities.
Applying practical chemistry expertise to prepare, handle, and assess carbon capture materials, and to evaluate their performance using CCMAC laboratory infrastructure and analytical techniques.
Conducting routine laboratory operations including chemical preparation, sample management, instrument operation, calibration support, and maintenance of key equipment.
Managing laboratory consumables, maintain accurate inventory records, and ensure safe and efficient day-to-day operation of the laboratory environment in accordance with CSIRO safety and quality standards.
Role particulars
Location and office arrangements: Perth (Waterford), WA
Salary: AU$100k - AU$113k per annum (pro rata for part-time), plus 15.4% superannuation
Tenure & work schedule: Specified term of 2 years; full time
Reference: 103260
As the successful candidate, you will bring:
A relevant tertiary qualification in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science (or a closely related discipline) with demonstrated hands-on laboratory experience in experimental chemistry and/or materials testing.
Experience coordinating technical activities or sample exchange with internal/external research collaborators and/or third-party partners.
Practical capability in operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting chemical laboratory equipment and/or analytical instrumentation, including preparing and handlling chemical samples and materials.
The ability to work effectively in a laboratory environment, including managing consumables and samples, following safety and quality procedures, and contributing to reliable day-to-day laboratory operations.
Experience working collaboratively with scientists, engineers or technical staff to deliver experimental or research outcomes.
A commitment to health, safety, and wellbeing of staff, willing to challenge the status quo in pursuit of Zero Harm.
