The Department of Property

The Department of Property is one of seven departments within the University of Auckland Business School. It offers a suite of Bachelor, postgraduate, and PhD programmes supported by close relationships with the property profession.

The Bachelor of Property is highly regarded by industry and accredited by the Valuers Registration Board, the Property Institute of New Zealand, and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

The Department has a vibrant teaching, research, and postgraduate culture. Its academic staff work across property economics, housing, property finance and investment, disaster management, property technologies, facilities management, sustainable buildings, property valuation, behavioural real estate, and property education.

Strong relationships with property firms, professional bodies, employers, and alumni provide opportunities for industry engagement, professional mentoring, applied teaching, and collaboration.

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

The Department of Property is seeking to appoint a Professional Teaching Fellow with strong professional and/or academic experience in property valuation.

The successful candidate will provide high-quality, professionally informed teaching, with a particular focus on property valuation and the leadership and coordination of core property courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

You will contribute to the development and delivery of courses that provide students with applied knowledge of valuation principles, valuation methods, market evidence, professional standards, property market analysis, and professional judgement.

A central part of the role will be helping students connect academic learning with professional property practice, particularly in areas relevant to valuation, advisory work, and industry expectations.

You will contribute to:

• Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate property courses.
• Coordinating and administering core and specialist property courses.
• Designing applied learning activities and professionally relevant assessments.
• Developing students’ valuation knowledge, analytical capability, and professional reasoning.
• Curriculum redevelopment and the continued enhancement of valuation education.
• Accreditation and registration-related teaching requirements.
• The use of appropriate teaching technologies and innovative learning methods.
• Maintaining high standards in teaching, assessment, feedback, and student support.
• Building effective relationships with industry contributors, professional bodies, accreditation stakeholders, and valuation registration organisations.
• Departmental, Faculty, and University service and citizenship activities.

The role does not include a formal research workload. However, the successful candidate will be expected to remain informed by current research, professional standards, and developments within the property and valuation professions.

The Professional Teaching Fellow will work collegially with academic staff, professional staff, students, industry contributors, and external partners to support an inclusive, applied, and professionally informed learning environment.

This is a full-time (40 hours per week) permanent position (subject to continuation).

Remuneration will depend on qualifications, professional experience, and achievements, and will be aligned with the University of Auckland Academic Standards policy.

Salary range: $105,790 (PTF1) - $139,198 (PTF4).

You will be a collegial and professionally engaged educator with strong applied knowledge of property valuation and a commitment to high-quality student learning.

You will be able to translate professional valuation knowledge and experience into clear, engaging, and applied learning opportunities for students.

You must hold an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification in Property, Property Valuation, Real Estate, Land Economy, Property Studies, or a closely related discipline.

You will also have:

• Proven professional or academic experience in property valuation, valuation advisory, property consultancy, or a closely related field.
• Professional valuation registration in New Zealand, chartered valuation status, or equivalent professional recognition would be an advantage.
• Membership of a relevant professional body, such as the New Zealand Institute of Valuers, the Property Institute of New Zealand, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, or an equivalent organisation, would also be desirable.
• Strong applied knowledge of valuation principles, valuation methods, market evidence, professional standards, and industry practice.
• Experience applying valuation methods and professional judgement in practice.
• The ability to teach valuation-related material at undergraduate or postgraduate level.
• The capacity to coordinate courses, develop curriculum, design assessments, and support applied student learning.
• Strong organisational and project management skills.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• The ability to work effectively with academic colleagues, professional staff, students, industry representatives, and external stakeholders.
• A strong commitment to professional education, student engagement, equity, and inclusive teaching.

We are particularly interested in applicants with experience in one or more of the following areas:

• Teaching or coordinating property valuation courses in a university, professional, or industry setting.
• Undergraduate, postgraduate, or professional masters teaching.
• International Valuation Standards and professional valuation requirements.
• Commercial, industrial, or residential property valuation.
• Special purpose property, plant and equipment, going concern, insurance, or other specialist valuation areas.
• Curriculum redevelopment and assessment design.
• Engagement with industry partners, professional bodies, accreditation organisations, or valuation registration stakeholders.

You will be enthusiastic about working with students from a range of academic, professional, cultural, and international backgrounds and will be able to inspire students through the practical application of valuation knowledge.
