The Walters Art Museum is among America's most distinctive museums, forging connections between people and art from cultures around the world and spanning seven millennia. The Public Program Educator’s primary role is to facilitate programs for multigenerational audiences through a variety of programming experiences. This is a part-time position that will also support staffing for public programs, including, but not limited to, talks, lectures, performances, workshops, family days, and conversations.
As a member of the Learning, Experience, and Community Engagement (LECE) Division, the educator will report directly to the Senior Manager of Public Programs with assistance from the Assistant Manager of Multigenerational Programs. LECE’s work is grounded in the museum’s commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.
Collaboratively develop, prepare for, and facilitate art activities at the museum for visitors of all ages, including drop-in art activities on weekends and at festivals. This includes supporting the preparation of materials necessary for these programs.
Support public programs by staffing registration and assisting with wayfinding, question-and-answer sessions, and event logistics as needed.
Maintain records related to public programs, including updating contact lists and tracking attendance and visitor feedback that will inform program improvements.
Actively contribute to the work of the Public Programs unit and Learning, Experience, and Community Engagement division as a whole. This includes, but is not limited to, staffing all divisional large-scale events, such as Lunar New Year, Block Party, and exhibition celebrations, as well as offsite programs as needed; attending meetings; providing input to strengthen programs; and organizing supplies.
Support outreach and promotion for the Learning, Experience, and Community Engagement department.
Participate in trainings and other professional development opportunities to learn about Walters exhibitions and collections; strengthen skills in museum education, audience engagement, and lesson planning; and explore a wide array of topics needed to engage multigenerational audiences.
All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
High school diploma/GED; B.A. in Education, Art Education, or Art preferred.
Able to work a Thursday–Saturday schedule, including some evenings and Sundays as needed.
At least 1 year of experience teaching art to youth in informal or formal educational settings.
At least 1 year of customer service experience.
At least 1 year of coursework or professional experience in art-making, community programming, studio art, art history, art education, or museum education preferred.
Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication and public speaking skills. Ability to communicate effectively with students and adults of diverse ages and backgrounds.
Demonstrated organizational and administrative skills.
Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.
Proficient with Google Suite, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, as well as digital communication platforms such as Google Meet.
Demonstrated interest in art, museums, and bringing people together in-person.
Enthusiasm for working with children, families, and adults, and engaging diverse museum audiences with art.
Thursday–Saturday schedule, including some evenings and Sundays as needed.
HOURLY RATE $20.55
The Walters Art Museum provides an excellent comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, prescription, vision, subsidized transportation and parking, museum membership, short term disability, long-term disability, life insurance, FSA (flexible spending account), 457b retirement, and free professional financial management counseling. This is a 100% onsite position and is part of the AFSCME-WWU collective bargaining unit.
