OVERVIEW OF ROLEThe Monitor Room Supervisor oversees the daily operations of the Museum’s 24/7 Monitor Room and the scheduling, training, and development of the security staff on the Day shift (8am-4pm), Evening Shift (4pm-12am), and the Night Shift (12am-8am). The Supervisor provides a safe and secure environment for all visitors and staff, as well as the art collection, by monitoring the activities in the museum. The Supervisor will report hazards such as fire, theft, vandalism, trespassing, disorderly conduct, etc., maintain order, and enforce the policies and procedures of the Walters Art Museum. The Supervisor’s regular weekly schedule is Monday-Friday, 12am-8am, but is an essential employee and is expected to remain on duty until properly relieved and provide back-up coverage for other shifts. Candidates must hold a valid State of Maryland Security Guard Certification.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide direct supervision for all shifts in the Monitor Room, which includes but is not limited to:

completing monthly schedules for all three Monitor Room shifts to ensure that all shifts are properly staffed and that all time off requests are covered;
ensuring that all shifts are aware of events and special needs on a daily basis and that all critical information is passed down from shift to shift;
training all new Monitor Room officers on the camera and alarm systems and the Museum’s policies and procedures and ensures that all officers maintain the required skill levels to perform their assigned duties;
monitoring and evaluating the performance of all direct reports to provide guidance, coaching, and feedback, including preparing annual performance evaluations for direct reports;
conducting daily personnel inspections to ensure that security staff are properly equipped and dressed in the issued uniform;
ensuring that all policies and procedures are followed and operational requirements are met, and
conducting random post inspections of the museum to ensure that the museum maintains a safe and secure environment.

Develop and maintain a strong knowledge of the art collection, the building structure and floorplans, and the museum’s policies and procedures. Inspect the art at various times during the shift and report any unusual circumstances.
Maintain a positive work relationship with Conservation, Registrars, and Collections Technicians to understand the safekeeping of all art.
Complete TSA certification to ensure proper procedures are followed during the packaging of artwork for shipment.
Uphold the Museum’s Visitor Promise by ensuring that the museum is safe, welcoming, and accessible, through work that includes but is not limited to the following activities:

patrolling throughout the museum, monitoring the activity of visitors and staff to ensure compliance with its policies and to ensure a safe and secure environment in accordance with the Visitor Promise;
checking for fire and safety hazards, vandalism, suspicious activity, and improper behavior;
reporting all incidents to the Manager of Safety and Security, and
responding to security and safety threats, fire, and other hazardous situations as directed.

Complete Incident Commander training in order to respond to all emergencies or hazardous situations occurring on the shift. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the Museum’s Emergency Operations Plan and complete training for various emergencies. In an emergency, assume Incident Command and provide guidance to ensure proper procedures are implemented by:

investigating and controlling the incident, providing assistance and determining the best course of action based on the situation, known facts, and established procedures;
reporting all security, safety, and environmental issues immediately to the Manager of Safety and Security;
preparing written reports of damage and unsafe conditions and ensuring that incident reports are completed as necessary by the end of the shift, and
responding to visitor related situations as necessary, ensuring that all issues are resolved in a professional and customer-friendly manner.

Complete First Aid/CPR/AED training.
Remain alert and attentive to the needs of visitors and staff; ensure that the museum is free from danger, risk, or otherwise hazardous situations.
Maintain a current operating knowledge of the alarm systems and CCTV systems.
Answer telephone and radio transmissions; monitor activity in and around the museum to ensure safety, and alert the Manager of Safety and Security to areas in need of special attention; place emergency calls as directed to fire, police, and other emergency agencies; and serve as the communications hub for the museum.
Respond to the special needs of the hard of hearing, persons with mental or physical challenges, or visually challenged visitors or staff.
Maintain a working knowledge of the policies and procedures regarding service animals, unattended children, armed visitors (law enforcement), and ensure that all support equipment (elevators, lifts, etc.) are working properly.
All other duties as assigned.

QualificationsJOB QUALIFICATIONS

Must have a valid State of Maryland Security Guard Certification; candidates without this certification will not be considered for the position
High School diploma or GED.
Minimum of five (5) years of previous experience in the security field; experience in a museum setting preferred.
Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience.
Sound knowledge of the security principles, practices, and procedures.
First Aid/AED/CPR certifications.
Proficiency with monitoring and controlling alarm systems, CCTV, and 2-way radio communications and other communication systems.
Background in preparing incident reports and experience using computers and standard office programs or software, as well as the ability to document details in a clear and concise manner.
Able to multitask, properly assess and respond to emergencies, and take appropriate actions while performing under pressure.
Strong customer service, interpersonal, and public relations skills.
Must be a team player and able to communicate effectively with visitors and staff at all levels, as well as with representatives from outside agencies.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.

SCHEDULED SHIFTMonday-Friday, or as required by circumstances and special events. This position will be on a rotating on call schedule to respond to security emergencies that may occur 24/7/365.

ANNUAL STARTING SALARY: $49,920 - $52,000The Walters Art Museum provides an excellent comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, prescription, vision, subsidized transportation and parking, museum membership, short term disability, FSA (flexible spending account), 457b retirement, and free professional financial management counseling.
