Candidates must have 9 or more years of experience as an expert-level machinist or CNC programmer, with welding experience being highly desirable. A high school diploma or GED is the minimum educational requirement.

The good-faith pay range for this role is $68,500.00 - $98,100.00 per year. Actual compensation may vary and may be above the posted range based on factors such as a candidate's skills, experience, education, certifications, and work location.
This role trains under electron beam engineering support to develop the skills needed to independently operate an e-beam welding cell, translating engineering drawings, CAD models, and customer specifications into CNC/NC programs while designing fixtures, tool paths, and weld parameters for each job. Responsibilities include managing vacuum chamber pump-down, positioning workpieces and configuring beam voltage, current, focus, and travel speed to match material and joint requirements. The role requires first-article prove-out, real-time beam programming and calibration adjustments and process optimization to reduce weld defects. Maintaining weld logs and traceability documentation in compliance with customer, industry, and radiation safety standards is normal practice.
Education above the minimum may be substituted for experience.

The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, located in Newport News, Virginia, is operated by SURATech, LLC, for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. The lab’s primary mission is to explore the fundamental nature of confined states of quarks and gluons, including the nucleons that make up the mass of the visible universe. Jefferson Lab is also a world leader in the development of the superconducting radiofrequency technology used for the lab’s Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility. This technology is the basis for an increasing array of applications at Jefferson Lab, other DOE labs, and in the international scientific community. The DOE has chosen Jefferson Lab as the lead for its future High Performance Data Facility. The HPDF will be a $300-500 million computing and data infrastructure resource that will provide transformational capabilities for data analysis, networking and storage for the nation’s research enterprise. It will provide researchers with tools, methods and technologies to maximize the scientific value of data.
