The neuropsychologist will provide comprehensive assessments to pediatric oncology patients to monitor neuro-cognitive development and provide clinical recommendations. They will work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team to support the long-term outcomes of children diagnosed with cancer.
Candidates must hold doctoral-level training in Clinical Neuropsychology and be registered or eligible for registration with the College of Psychologists of Ontario. A minimum of two years of recent, relevant experience working with children and adolescents is required.
The Neuropsychology service within the Pediatric Oncology team offers an important role in the long term outcomes of children diagnosed with cancer in the Hamilton, Halton, Waterloo and Niagara regions. The majority of children treated for cancer incur neuro-toxic effects on the developing brain and the neuropsychology service assesses and monitors for changes across the lifespan. We work collaboratively with physicians, nurses, social workers, child-life specialists and Allied Health in a multi-disciplinary setting. The Neuropsychologist receives referrals from the medical team and will provide comprehensive neuropsychological assessments to the patients, to measure and monitor neuro-cognitive development and provide recommendations related to neuropsychological changes and referrals to other services for any psychological concerns. Neuropsychological assessment referrals are received exclusively from the pediatric hematology and oncology program and the position will have a designated psychometrist. Knowledge and experience with neuro-oncological diagnoses, such as brain tumors and leukemia’s, as well as exposure to associated neurological sequelae including seizures, stroke, and other blood disorders, would be an asset. A candidate who is also trained as a Clinical Psychologist would be an asset to offer psycho-diagnostic and psychoeducational assessment.
