The Forward Deployed Expert will embed with construction project teams to drive the adoption of AI tools and optimize operational workflows. They will also act as a SWAT unit to resolve critical project issues and provide feedback to the product team to shape the roadmap.
Requirements
Candidates must have 5+ years of experience in construction operations and demonstrate high AI fluency with tools like Claude and ChatGPT. A bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field is required, along with the ability to travel up to 75% of the time.
Full job description
At Trunk Tools, we’re the leading AI company revolutionizing construction, the second-largest industry on earth. We recently raised a $40M Series B led by Insight Partners, bringing our total funding to $70M from top-tier investors including Redpoint and Innovation Endeavors. This new round is fueling our next phase of growth as we scale AI agents across the jobsite.
Our mission is to build the future of construction through intelligent automation. Despite being a $13+ trillion industry, construction still runs largely on analog processes, we’re changing that by embedding AI directly into field operations.
Founded by builders and technologists (Stanford, MIT), our team has delivered software used by over 140,000 field professionals, impacting millions of users and contributing to $10B+ in built projects. Many of us come from the field ourselves, giving us a deep understanding of the industry’s unique challenges.
After years of building the “brain” of construction, we’re now launching production-ready AI agents, starting with intelligent document processing and Q&A, and rapidly expanding into core operational workflows. Our team has doubled in the past year, and with 100+ employees (50+ engineers), we’re scaling fast and entering a period of hypergrowth. This is a rare opportunity to join at an inflection point.
Position Overview
Trunk Tools is looking for Forward Deployed Experts (FDX) to drive AI adoption where it actually happens — on active jobsites. This is not a back-office role, and it is not a custom-engineering role. The FDX is a construction operator who has become deeply AI-fluent, embedded with a general contractor’s project teams to change how work gets done. You’ll be part of a deployed team that operates like a SWAT unit: driving adoption region by region, finding efficiency opportunities, and dropping into critical projects to get them back on track using the full AI stack — Trunk Tools products alongside additional cutting edge tools. You’ll consult on custom agent opportunities and partner with our product teams on them, but your job is behavioral change and adoption, not building agents. This role is field-embedded with heavy travel, up to 75%.
Key Responsibilities
Field Adoption & Behavioral Change
Embed with project teams and superintendents to drive daily, hands-on use of Trunk Tools and the broader AI stack.
Run workshops, competitions, and side-by-side coaching that turn skeptics into everyday users.
Meet the field where it is — builder-to-builder, on the jobsite, under real-world pressure.
Efficiency & Workflow Optimization
Identify the highest-value AI use cases for each business unit and rebuild the workflow around them.
Tie every push to a measurable outcome — time saved, cost reduced, or work won.
Capture use cases and feed them back into the shared library so other teams and accounts benefit.
Critical-Project SWAT
Deploy into at-risk or high-priority projects and use the AI stack to get them back on track.
Diagnose where teams are stuck and stand up practical, AI-enabled workflows fast.
Tooling & Agent Consulting
Advise on where custom agents would create value and partner with Trunk Tools product teams to scope them.
Stay current across the AI tool landscape so you can match the right tool to the job.
Train-the-Trainer & Handoff
Certify customer champions and trainers so adoption sustains itself after our behavioral change program concludes.
Transfer capability deliberately — the goal is a self-running team, then on to the next region or account.
Measurement & Feedback
Track adoption and behavioral-change metrics for your region and report them up.
Bring field feedback back to Product to shape the roadmap.
Qualifications
Experience
5+ years in construction operations — superintendent, project engineer/manager, VDC/BIM, or field operations — with real time spent on active jobsites.
Demonstrated, high AI fluency: a daily power-user of AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT, and others) who has already changed how they work.
A track record of driving adoption or change in the field, and of turning around struggling situations.
Skills & Knowledge
Deep knowledge of construction workflows — submittals, RFIs, drawings, scheduling, and the daily grind of a project team.
Strong AI-tool fluency and the instinct to match the right tool to the right workflow.
A natural coach and communicator who earns trust on the jobsite.
Comfortable with heavy travel and embedding on-site for stretches at a time.
Education
Bachelor’s in construction management, engineering, or a related field — or equivalent field experience.
AI or tool-specific certifications are a plus.
