Your role
As a Financial and Economic Analyst, you will undertake data collection, modelling and analysis to determine the costs and cost drivers of activities, processes and outputs across the justice and social welfare system. Generate insightful information from this analysis to support decision-makers in forecasting costs, considering alternative scenarios, and optimising the use of resources.
What you’ll do
As part of the Financial and Economic Analysis team within Strategic Finance, you will be responsible for but not limited to:
The Financial and Economic Analysis team sits within Reporting and Analytics, under Strategic Finance at the Department of Communities and Justice. The team plays a key role in supporting the Department by delivering financial analysis and building costing/economic models that inform critical decision-making across the organisation.
We operate in a dynamic environment that balances a mix of annual BAU responsibilities alongside a variety of ad hoc projects that evolve with the Department’s needs. We pride ourselves on being a highly collaborative team where knowledge sharing and working together is central to how we operate — whether tackling day-to-day work or delivering complex analysis, you will never be working alone.
What we’re looking for
The ideal candidate is an enthusiastic and quick-thinking problem-solver with a genuine interest in working with financial and operational data. You will bring solid Excel skills and an eagerness to learn and develop your capability in tools such as Alteryx, SQL and Power Query as part of the team's broader analytical work. Equally important is your ability to communicate effectively — this role involves engaging with colleagues and stakeholders to support model development, troubleshoot issues, and help present findings clearly.
Whether you come from a finance, economics or data background, what matters most is your curiosity, attention to detail, proactive attitude, willingness to take on new challenges, and collaborative approach to getting things done — along with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
