By integrating engineering, manufacturing, modular deployment, and lifecycle services under one platform, we streamline execution and bring complex projects online faster - without compromising performance. With a robust U.S. manufacturing network, MCG supports data centers, power generation, healthcare, oil & gas, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and industrial facilities where uptime is non-negotiable. Mission Critical Group designs, manufactures and provides value-added services for customers requiring critical power solutions. Powering a new electric world for a brighter, more secure future.
Job Description
The Metal Shop Lead supports the Metal Shop Supervisor by coordinating the fabrication functions within the metal shop to support the assembly of custom switchgear structures. This dual-impact role combines operational leadership with hands-on technical execution to ensure all products meet precise client specifications and are prepared for shipment. The Lead is responsible for maintaining a safe work environment, demonstrating mastery of machinery safety, and training or mentoring metal shop technicians. Success in this role requires the ability to interpret complex blueprints and a willingness to provide occasional on-site support for installation or service projects. As a non-exempt role, standard hours are 40 per week; however, flexibility is required to meet critical deadlines. This may involve overtime, including evenings and weekends, as necessitated by production schedules.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
The following list of responsibilities is not all-inclusive, additional projects and/or tasks may be assigned to meet operational needs. MCG retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position should operational needs warrant.
Team Lead Responsibilities
Operational Oversight: Partner with the Metal Shop Supervisor to oversee daily operations, ensuring all productivity, efficiency, and quality standards are met or exceeded.
Project Management: Monitor and report project progress using established software and internal tracking processes to ensure deadlines are consistently met.
Process Improvement: Proactively identify, propose, and implement enhancements to metal shop workflows to increase throughput and reduce waste.
Management Support: Serve as the primary point of contact and provide coverage for the Metal Shop Supervisor during absences; assist with facility opening and closing procedures to ensure site security.
Mentorship & Coaching: Lead by example to foster a culture of excellence; provide hands-on training and technical coaching to technicians to enhance their skillsets.
Performance Insight: Monitor team output and provide substantive input to the Metal Shop Manager regarding performance evaluations and professional development needs.
Talent Acquisition: Participate in the interview process for departmental vacancies and lead the onboarding and technical training of new hires.
Resource Coordination: Coordinate overtime scheduling and labor allocation as needed to hit critical operational targets.
Safety Advocacy: Conduct regular safety briefings and ensure rigorous adherence to all company safety policies and OSHA standards.
Equipment Maintenance: Oversee and perform routine maintenance programs to maximize equipment uptime and ensure all machinery is operating at peak performance.
Logistics Oversight: Coordinate the final preparation and staging of materials to ensure accurate and timely shipments.
Professional Growth: Actively participate in advanced operational, safety, and leadership training as mandated by management to maintain a high level of expertise.
Metal Shop Technician Responsibilities:
Duties may include but not be limited to the following:
Precision Machining: Expertly operate metal shop machinery, including CNC punches, press brakes, shears, and various industrial saws.
Welding & Finishing: Perform high-quality welding on sheet metal components and execute pre-treatment processes to prepare goods for coating.
Assembly & Integration: Assemble custom metalwork, involving the manual handling and precision fitment of sheet metal, raw steel, and copper materials.
Blueprint Interpretation: Read and accurately interpret technical blueprints and schematic diagrams to ensure all fabrications meet exact specifications.
Tool Proficiency: Utilize a wide array of hand and power tools with precision to execute daily fabrication and assembly tasks.
Core Fabrication: Execute essential fabrication duties, including specialized saw cutting, drilling, and deburring.
Cross-Functional Support: Participate in cross-training initiatives to gain proficiency in additional skills, providing flexible support to other departments as operational needs evolve.
Shop Stewardship: Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace while performing other duties as assigned to support overall shop efficiency.
Qualifications
Required Knowledge/Experience:
Minimum 4–5 years in general mechanical or metal working or associated field.
Valid driver’s license.
Bachelors or Technical College degree or diploma in a related field, which may include Electrical Power, Computer Science, Business, or Engineering, a plus.
Supervisory Requirements
This role does not directly supervise employees but provides essential guidance and mentoring to an assigned team within the department in the execution of department objectives
Required Skills & Abilities:
Team Leadership: Ability to motivate a diverse team, foster a collaborative environment, and drive collective performance.
Effective Communication: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly with stakeholders via in-person interactions, phone, and digital platforms (email/collaboration software).
Autonomous Problem-Solving: Ability to work with minimal supervision, exercising sound judgment to resolve issues and achieve departmental objectives.
Technical Literacy: Advanced ability to read and interpret complex schematics, blueprints, and technical diagrams.
Precision Tooling: Proficient in the use of hand and power tools with high accuracy. This includes, but is not limited to:
Measurement: Calipers, scales, rulers, and tape measures.
Fastening: Impact guns, torque wrenches, gear wrenches, and both metric and standard socket sets.
Production Alignment: Capable of following complex verbal and written instructions to ensure the production schedule remains on track.
Quality Assurance: Highly detail-oriented with a steadfast commitment to quality standards to minimize rework and ensure product integrity.
