Summary:
The Indigenous counsellor supports First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students by addressing mental health needs through accessible counselling and group therapy services. This role involves providing assessments, psychotherapy, crisis intervention, and referrals within a confidential and culturally responsive environment. This position contributes to urgent and ongoing care for a diverse student population, including families. The counsellor engages with Indigenous knowledge systems and contributes to culturally relevant programming aligned with the university’s Indigenous engagement priorities. This role forms part of a collaborative care network that promotes student wellness and academic success. Additionally, this position includes participation in outreach initiatives and supervision of practicum students.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs urgent risk assessments of students in crisis and develops crisis management plans.
Conducts comprehensive intake interviews and assesses mental health functioning and treatment needs.
Provides psychotherapy through individual, couple, and group interventions.
Oversees a clinically appropriate caseload in alignment with professional standards.
Delivers timely initial assessments and follow-up treatment services.
Develops and participates in culturally relevant outreach and group programming.
Collaborates with campus partners, including an Indigenous student support centre team.
Provides referrals and coordinates access to internal and external support services.
Supports clinical supervision of student practicum trainees.
Maintains accurate clinical documentation and administrative records.
Communicates and acts in a respectful and professional manner, collaborates effectively, abides by policy, and contributes to a positive and productive work and learning environment.
Qualifications:
A master’s degree in psychology, education, or social work; a doctorate degree is an asset.
Registration with a relevant professional association.
Minimum of seven years of extensive post-graduate clinical experience in psychotherapy.
Experience working with Indigenous clients and providing culturally relevant care.
Expertise in crisis intervention, suicide risk assessment, and mental health evaluation.
Strong knowledge of student development, diversity, and multicultural considerations.
Knowledge of Indigenous counselling methodologies, community issues, and support services.
Deep understanding of Indigenous culture, history, protocols, and ways of knowing in Saskatchewan.
Advanced psychotherapy and clinical intervention skills, particularly with young adults.
Ability to assess risk related to self-harm and harm to others.
Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
Ability to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and cultural sensitivity in client interactions.
High attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively in a team.
