Overview

The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to the mission of saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries. We work at the invitation of governments to support them and the private sector to create and sustain high-quality health systems. 

 

CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with the highest burden of the disease. Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus. Today, along with HIV, we work in conjunction with our partners to prevent and treat infectious diseases such as COVID-19, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Our work has also expanded into cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases, and we work to accelerate the rollout of lifesaving vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition, and increase access to assistive technology. We are investing in horizontal approaches to strengthen health systems through programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing. With each new and innovative program, our strategy is grounded in maximizing sustainable impact at scale, ensuring that governments lead the solutions, that programs are designed to scale nationally, and learnings are shared globally.

WJCF has partnered with the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and state health departments since 2007, providing technical and operational support across key health priorities, including infectious diseases (COVID-19, hepatitis, HIV, TB, vector-borne diseases), non-communicable diseases (cervical cancer, diabetes, sickle cell disease), maternal and child health (anaemia, immunisation, diarrhoea, pneumonia), sexual and reproductive health, health insurance and digital health (AB PM-JAY, ABDM), oxygen and hypoxemia management, safe drinking water, and climate and health.

Program Overview:

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1D) is an auto-immune disease characterized by reduced ability to produce insulin in the body. T1D usually develops in children, adolescents, or young adults, leading to a lifetime dependence on insulin for survival. The condition is associated with a significant strain and poor quality of life, and leading to a high financial burden, for people living with Type 1 Diabetes (PLT1D) and their families. However, with access to timely diagnostic, initiation on treatment and proper management of the condition, people living with T1D can lead healthy and productive lives, while achieving life expectancy comparable to the general population.

There are an estimated 9.4 million PLT1D globally, with India having the second highest share accounting for 8%-10% of the global prevalence. Nearly 18% of children and adolescents with T1D (~0.3 million) live in India, the highest in the world. The incidence of T1D in the 0-19 age group is increasing more than any other age group and is estimated to increase from 8.15 per 100,000 in 2024 to 13.95 per 100,000 by 2040. While the burden of T1D has continued to rise over the years, survival has remained poor. Survival rates for children and adolescents with T1D in India is worse compared to countries with similar socio-economic development. On average, a child diagnosed with T1D at the age of 10 years lives only an additional 29 years of healthy life, contributing to premature mortality and poor quality of life.

There is an urgent need to improve access to screening and diagnosis and to ensure initiation and adherence to treatment for T1D. WJCF’s Type 1 Diabetes program aims at strengthening and improving access to quality T1D care in India, with the overall goal of achieving longer, healthier, and more productive lives for People Living with Type 1 Diabetes. The program aims to address critical barriers to delivery of quality T1D care in India by building awareness, improving access to screening, diagnosis, and treatment services, enabling treatment adherence and self-management, and strengthening governance framework for delivery of T1D care.

Position Summary:

WJCF seeks a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual with outstanding credentials and demonstrated analytical and problem-solving abilities for the role of Sr Associate (Type 1 Diabetes), based in New Delhi. WJCF's Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) program works in close collaboration with India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) to strengthen systems for early diagnosis, treatment access, and care for people living with T1D. To support this effort, we are looking for a driven, trained professional with excellent credentials to lead stakeholder engagements, evidence generation, and technical assistance to the Ministry. This role requires someone who is equally comfortable in policy corridors and in the field: someone who can build trust with their counterparts, translate data into action, and lead multi-stakeholder processes without formal authority. Beyond qualifications, we're looking for someone with genuine conviction about driving systemic change in public health: someone who thrives in ambiguity and finds ways to move things forward despite institutional complexity. The ideal candidate will be deeply collaborative yet takes clear ownership of outcomes, and brings intellectual curiosity and rigor to both strategy and execution in equal measure.

Responsibilities

1. Guideline Rollout Support

• Lead WJCF's technical support to MoHFW (NCD Division and Child Health Division) on rollout of the Diabetes Mellitus in Children guideline and RBSK 2.0
• Conceptualise, Develop and Implement rollout plans, training frameworks, and implementation tools in coordination with Ministry teams
• Track rollout progress, identify bottlenecks, and develop solutions in real time

2. Government Engagement and Advocacy

• Serve as the primary interface between Ministry officials and the WJCF T1D team
• Build and maintain trusted relationships with key stakeholders across MoHFW and state health departments
• Represent WJCF in technical working groups, review meetings, and policy discussions
• Advocate for evidence-backed strategies that accelerate T1D program outcomes

 3. Evidence Generation

• Lead the program's evidence generation workstream, including study design, data collection oversight, analysis, and dissemination
• Translate findings into actionable insights for government partners and WJCF program leadership
• Steer efforts to put up publications, briefs, and reports that accelerate T1D program outcomes

 

4. Program Management & Team Cooridnation

• Lead cross-functional workstreams within the T1D project, coordinating across internal teams and external partners
• Support the program leadership in strategic planning, donor reporting, and stakeholder management
• Collaborate with team members and model a data-driven, outcome-focused work culture

 

 

Qualifications

• MBBS or equivalent medical degree (required) with 5–8 years of post-qualification experience, with at least 2–3 years in public health program implementation
• Demonstrated experience working with or supporting government health programs at the national or state level
• Track record of leading teams or workstreams; comfort with leading without direct authority
• Strong analytical skills and experience using data to inform program decisions
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; proficiency in Hindi preferred

Preferred:

• Postgraduate specialisation in Endocrinology, Pediatrics, or Public Health (MD/DNB/MPH)
• Prior experience with international NGOs or multilateral organisations (e.g., WHO, UNICEF, UNDP, WJCF, JHPIEGO, PATH, or similar)
• Experience with NCD or child health programs specifically
• Familiarity with MoHFW program structures, RBSK, or national NCD frameworks
