Full job description
The Corporate Accountant is a key member of the accounting team and is responsible for supporting general ledger accounting and month-end close activities for Sage Publications. This role supports the Senior Manager, US GAAP Accounting by interpreting and applying established accounting policies, U.S. GAAP principles, and professional judgment to analyze account activity, prepare timely journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, supporting schedules, and resolve assigned accounting matters. The position requires two to four years of accounting experience, a working knowledge of U.S. GAAP and the ability to manage assigned accounting responsibilities, while supporting accurate and timely month-end close activities. The Corporate Accountant also collaborates with cross-functional teams on accounting matters, supports audit requests, and assists with general ledger account maintenance and finance system coordination.
Your New Role:
In coordination with the Senior Manager, perform assigned general ledger and month-end close responsibilities for corporate accounting. Responsibilities include the following:
Prepare revenue accruals and related journal entries by reviewing revenue activity and related account support, evaluating the timing of revenue recognition, and ensuring entries are properly calculated, supported, and recorded in accordance with U.S. GAAP and established accounting procedures.
Perform the goods received but not invoiced (GRNI) analysis by reviewing the GRNI report, following up with stakeholders to validate receipt status and open obligations, determining required accruals, adjustments, or reversals, and preparing related journal entries in accordance with U.S. GAAP and established accounting procedures.
Evaluate and resolve assigned ad hoc accounting matters across core accounting areas, including prepaid expenses, payroll-related entries, and bonus accruals, by researching account activity, determining appropriate corrective action, and recording related journal entries and support as needed.
Apply working knowledge of U.S. GAAP and established accounting policies to support the evaluation of assigned accounting matters, including researching and documenting the impact of new or updated accounting guidance as needed.
On a monthly basis, perform balance sheet reconciliations for assigned accounts, analyze account balances and reconciling items, assess whether supporting documentation is complete and appropriate, and determine or recommend corrective actions to resolve reconciling items on a timely basis.
Working alongside the Senior Manager, evaluate requests for new or updated general ledger accounts, prepare supporting documentation, assess mapping and reporting impacts, coordinate required approvals, and ensure approved accounts are mapped accurately in related finance systems.
Perform budget-to-actual and period-over-period variance analyses for assigned accounts and business areas by identifying significant fluctuations and preparing clear explanations for management review.
Support the parent company’s financial statement audit by preparing assigned schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation, and by coordinating timely responses to audit requests with internal teams.
Collaborate with and serve as an accounting resource to cross-functional departments, including Trade and Royalty Payments Processing, Payroll, Financial Planning & Analysis, Tax, and Financial Technology, by resolving accounting questions raised and coordinating communications needed for close and reporting activities.
Can you be our next Corporate Accountant?
This may include, but is not limited to, the following:
2–4 years of relevant accounting experience with journal entries, account reconciliations, and month-end close activities required.
BA or BS in Accounting or Finance required; advanced degree in accounting is a plus; equivalent combination of relevant accounting experience and specialized accounting knowledge will be considered.
Public accounting experience and/or progress toward CPA certification is a plus.
Working knowledge of U.S. GAAP, accrual accounting, general ledger accounting, and internal controls over financial reporting required.
Experience with BlackLine or similar reconciliation and close management tools, along with strong Excel skills, preferred.
Exceptional problem-solving skills and strong adaptability when faced with new or unfamiliar challenges.
Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment in resolving accounting matters, prioritizing close responsibilities, and escalating significant issues.
Strong communication skills and confidence in working through routine accounting issues with cross-functional stakeholders.
Detail oriented, analytical, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
Well organized, able to plan ahead, adapt to changing priorities, and deliver accurate work on time and to a high professional standard.
If you have a disability and you need any support during the application process, please contact [email protected] All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.
