Full job description
Job Description:
Why Onni Capital
Most controller roles are maintenance. You inherit a system, a team, a close calendar, and a set of decisions someone else made years ago. This one is construction.
Onni Capital invests its own capital. There is no fundraising cycle and no external limited partners with conflicting reporting demands. That means you are building a reporting system designed to actually inform decisions rather than to satisfy a compliance checklist.
You will sit close to the transactions. When we buy a construction services business or convert an industrial site into a data centre, you are in the room for the structuring conversation, not receiving the file after close. The purchase price allocation, the opening balance sheet, and the earnout mechanics are yours to get right.
The businesses we start are yours to set up properly from day one, before bad habits form. That is unusual, and it is the part of the job that compounds.
How We Work
Onni Capital is being designed as a high ownership, low bureaucracy team. We work in small project groups, test ideas quickly, put early products in front of users, and make decisions based on evidence rather than hierarchy. Team members are expected to:
Challenge assumptions and communicate directly
Take responsibility for outcomes, not simply produce recommendations
Use modern AI tools to work faster and produce better results
Share unfinished work early and improve it through feedback
Move comfortably between strategic analysis and hands on execution
Know when to continue investing in an idea and when to stop
Operate effectively without a detailed playbook
This is not a role for someone who wants months of consensus building, a rigid job description, or a narrowly defined set of responsibilities. It is for someone who learns quickly, takes initiative, enjoys solving ambiguous problems, and wants to help build something from the ground up.
What You Will Do
Fund accounting and investor reporting
Design, implement, and operate the fund accounting system in house, including chart of accounts, entity structure, consolidation logic, and intercompany eliminations
Own the management fee calculation and billing cycle, and the supporting expense allocation methodology
Produce quarterly investor reporting packages, including capital account statements, performance reporting, and portfolio commentary
Produce annual audited financial statements and manage the external audit end to end, including the planning meeting, the prepared by client list, fieldwork, and resolution of audit findings
Complete annual portfolio valuations, document the methodology, and defend the marks to auditors and to ownership
Track and report returns at fund and asset level, including IRR, MOIC, and performance against acquisition basis
Treasury, banking, and cash management
Own treasury across the platform, including daily cash position, liquidity management, and short term cash forecasting
Own banking relationships and account structure, including account opening, signing authorities, entitlements, and the payment approval matrix
Manage payment execution and controls, including wire and electronic funds transfer authorisation, dual approval thresholds, and fraud prevention
Manage debt facilities and capital calls, including drawdowns, repayments, covenant compliance, and lender reporting
Manage foreign exchange exposure across Canadian and United States operations, and the movement of funds between entities
Manage surplus cash and short term investment of idle balances within approved policy
Financial planning and analysis
Own the annual budget and the rolling forecast for Onni Capital and for the operating companies it builds
Produce monthly variance analysis with commentary that explains why a number moved, not just that it moved
Build and maintain the reporting cadence: monthly management reporting, quarterly investor reporting, annual audited financials
Model cash requirements across the platform and flag funding needs before they become urgent
Internal controls, tax, and compliance
Design and operate the internal control framework, including segregation of duties, approval limits, delegation of authority, and documented policies proportionate to a business of this size
Own the accounting policy manual and ensure consistent application across every entity
Own tax compliance across the platform, including corporate filings, indirect tax, cross border considerations, and coordination with Onni Group counsel and external tax advisors
Maintain the entity register and ensure statutory filings, corporate records, and regulatory obligations are met for every entity
Coordinate insurance and the finance side of risk management across the platform
Own the finance technology stack, including selection, implementation, and integration of accounting, reporting, expense, and treasury systems
Operating company accounting
Own the accounting function for the businesses Onni Capital starts, currently Valorem, Craton Mission Critical, and Panni Consulting, including implementation of the accounting system, chart of accounts, and month end close
Establish the billing, revenue recognition, and cost allocation approach for Panni Consulting, including internal preferred rate work and external market rate engagements
Set up banking, payment controls, expense management, and approval thresholds for each new entity as it is formed
Transactions
Own purchase accounting on acquisitions alongside the private equity team, including purchase price allocation, opening balance sheets, contingent consideration, and post close true ups
Support diligence on quality of earnings, working capital pegs, and net debt calculations
Advise on entity structuring and transaction accounting implications ahead of close, working with Onni Group counsel and external tax advisors
Set up treasury, banking, and controls inside newly acquired businesses as part of the first hundred days
Team and standards
Manage the Intermediate Accountant and build out the accounting team as the platform grows
Automate reporting wherever it can be automated, using modern AI and finance tooling rather than adding headcount
Document processes, models, decisions, and operating standards so successful approaches can be repeated across the team
What You Bring
CPA designation, with meaningful private equity, fund, or investment management accounting experience. This is a requirement, not a preference. You should have owned fund level books, investor reporting, and capital account mechanics before
Direct experience with purchase accounting and business combinations, including purchase price allocation and opening balance sheets
Experience owning an external audit end to end, as the person the auditors dealt with rather than a contributor to someone else's file
Experience implementing an accounting system from scratch, or materially rebuilding one, rather than only operating an established one
Genuine financial planning and analysis capability. Budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and the judgment to know which variances matter
Treasury capability, including cash forecasting, banking administration, payment controls, and management of debt facilities and covenant compliance
Experience designing and operating an internal control framework, including segregation of duties, approval authorities, and fraud prevention
Working command of corporate and indirect tax compliance, and the judgment to know when to bring in an external advisor
Strong technical accounting knowledge under ASPE and IFRS, with the ability to research a position, document it, and defend it
Comfort with consolidation across multiple entities, including intercompany transactions and eliminations
Demonstrated ability to use modern AI tools to automate reporting, reconciliation, analysis, and documentation
Strong written communication. You can put a financial result in front of ownership in one page and have it land
The judgment to build controls proportionate to the business rather than importing a public company control framework into a twenty person team
Comfort operating without a shared services function behind you. If it is a finance task, it is yours to solve rather than to route somewhere else
Comfort working in a small, fast moving team where the answer is often that no process exists yet and you need to create one
High personal standards for accuracy, quality, ownership, and follow through
Nice to Have
Experience at a fund administrator, or having transitioned a fund from third party administration to self administration
Experience with construction, industrial services, real estate, or data centre accounting
Experience setting up accounting for newly formed operating companies
Familiarity with QuickBooks, and with modern finance tooling for expense management, billing, and reporting automation
Big Four transaction services or audit background
Experience supporting a business through rapid entity growth, where the number of legal entities multiplied quickly
What Success Looks Like
Success in this role is not measured by whether the books close. It is measured by whether ownership can trust every number that leaves this platform, and whether the function you build scales without adding headcount for every new entity.
Within the first 90 days:
The chart of accounts, entity structure, and consolidation approach are designed and implemented rather than improvised
The fund accounting system is live, with a documented month end close calendar and defined responsibilities
The management fee calculation methodology and expense allocation basis are agreed and documented
Treasury is under control. Daily cash position is visible, banking structure and signing authorities are set, and the payment approval matrix is documented and enforced
The internal control framework and delegation of authority are drafted and in use
You have a defensible view of where the current numbers are weak and a plan to fix them
Within the first year:
Onni Capital has issued its first investor reporting packages on time, with capital account statements and performance reporting that need no rework
The first annual audit has been completed with no material adjustments and no significant deficiencies raised
Portfolio valuations are supported by documented methodology that survived auditor challenge
Financial planning and analysis is operating, with a rolling forecast, monthly variance commentary that explains causes rather than restating numbers, and cash requirements flagged before they become urgent
Cash forecasting is accurate enough that funding needs are anticipated rather than discovered, and no covenant or facility obligation has been missed
Tax filings and statutory obligations are current across every entity, with no penalties or late filings
Accounting for every operating company Onni Capital started is running on a consistent system and closing on schedule
Purchase accounting on every acquisition completed during the year is done correctly, with opening balance sheets and post close true ups settled
A meaningful part of the close and reporting cycle has been automated, so the second year does not require a second accountant to run the same volume
The accounting function operates independently. Nothing routine escalates to ownership, and nothing routine gets routed to Onni Group shared services
The deal team treats you as someone whose view on a number changes the decision, not as a reporting function downstream of it
What Makes This Role Different
You will build the finance function rather than run someone else's. In a single quarter, you may be involved in:
Designing the chart of accounts and entity structure the platform will use for the next decade
Opening bank accounts and setting the payment authority matrix for a brand new entity
Sitting in the structuring conversation on a live acquisition before the deal is signed
Setting up the books, banking, and controls for a company that did not exist ninety days earlier
Producing the first investor reporting package Onni Capital has ever issued
Defending a portfolio valuation to external auditors
Automating a reconciliation that would otherwise have justified another hire
Telling the deal team a number does not support the thesis
The expectation is high ownership. You will be the person ownership relies on for the accuracy of every number that leaves this platform, and for the fact that the finance function does not need anyone else to run.
