The ED Tech provides direct, compassionate patient care including performing EKGs, collecting vital signs, and assisting physicians and nurses with medical procedures. They are also responsible for maintaining a clean environment, managing supplies, and ensuring patient safety and flow within the emergency department.

Requirements

Candidates must have a high school diploma and a valid certification as a CNA, EMT, MA, or be a nursing student who has completed their first semester. BLS certification is required, and additional certifications in aggression management and NIMS are required within six months of hire.

Summary

The ED Tech functions primarily in direct patient care, and demonstrates competent clinical practice with a variety of patients. The tech in the ED works as part of a team with a common goal of offering patient centered, timely care, in a safe and friendly environment. The tech in this position offers individualized compassionate care to emergency department patients, observation patients, and outpatients based on the direction of the physician and RN. The tech pleasantly provides nonjudgmental care for the acutely ill, as well as the non-acute patient. This position requires the ability to perform multiple ancillary roles including, but not limited to, performing duties and procedures within the scope of their practice as assigned, specimen collection, vital signs, EKGs, stocking of supplies, cleaning, and transportation of patients, clerical responsibilities, lab collection, respiratory treatments, and other duties as assigned. This position requires assisting the nurse, physician, and other members of the team to provide relationship based patient centered care. The tech in this role works with multiple types of sophisticated equipment and handles various types of patients in a friendly and frequently stressful environment.


Responsibilities

40% The tech as part of a multidisciplinary team, maintains a friendly customer oriented attitude at all times. It is expected that all team members will work together to provide the best possible care to MyMichigan Healths patients, families, visitors, staff, community members, and any other person that is encountered while representing MyMichigan Health. It is expected that at all times the tech will treat every person they encounter with non-judgmental: kindness, compassion, respect, and relationship based care. 

 

30% Follows direction from RN to provide services as prescribed by the physicians authorized plan of care and accepted standards of evidence-based practice that is within the techs scope of practice. Provides direct patient care including minor treatments, answering call lights, assisting with transfers, responding to alarms, and other duties as assigned. 

 

20% Reports effectiveness of treatment plan to the RN and makes suggestions or participates in updating/revising the treatment plan in collaboration with other team members, utilizing current information to improve patient care.

 

10% The tech is knowledgeable and compliant with all local, state, and federal regulations and guidelines. The tech maintains knowledge of MyMichigan Health and ED specific policies and procedures relating to the care provided and maintains professional standards.

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Safety

o Demonstrates awareness of specific safety concerns in department. Demonstrates competencyin Infection Prevention and Control Practices and Policies

o Complies with MyMichigan Health safety guidelines.

o Maintain department equipment as necessary.

o Identifies and communicates concern regarding unsafe conditions or equipment promptly.

o Participates in medical center safety drills.

o Utilizes appropriate lift equipment on a routine basis.

Education

o Attends education days.

o Seeks opportunities for self-education and enrichment while sharing information with co-workers.

Patient Care

o Collects vital signs and weight.

o Participates in direct patient care. Moves, lifts, and transports patients as required.

o Performs EKG.

o Performs intravenous access as ordered and when within scope, in a prompt accurate manner.

o Performs other clinical and technical aspects of care in accordance with established policies.

o Recognizes and displays pleasant, friendly and cooperative manner to public.

o Maintains clean and tidy exam room, including inventory of room supplies.

o Maintains orderly patient flow.

o Cleans equipment.

o Is familiar with cardiac monitors, can apply leads and operate equipment.

o Can assist with emergency equipment and procedures under the direct supervision of the RN or ED physician.

o Completes documentation as required.

o Follows sterile technique during set up and throughout procedure. Assists physicians with all types of procedures.

Quality

o Supports the mission, goals, policies, and standards of the ED.

o Assists RN to ensure patient care outcomes and safety needs are met.

o Communicates identified problems to appropriate personnel and implements actions to assure patient needs are met.

o Assists unit in maintaining the area according to Joint Commission standards.

o Participates in quality improvement activities in the department.

Unit Assistant

o All Clerical Duties.

o Answers telephone.

o Enters labs and other orders as requested. Enters POC results in the EMR.

Assists with medical procedures and minor surgery.

o Assists with all medical procedures and minor surgery.

o Demonstrates knowledge of sterile technique.

Emergency Care/Safety

o Health Care Provider certification maintained (as applicable).

o Performs according to procedure in all medical center emergency situations.

o Provides and ensures safe and secure environment for the patient.

o Is familiar with all safety and emergency procedures.

o Observes fall safety precautions.

Ordering and Stocking

o Assists with ordering as indicated.

May include: Orders from purchasing weekly for medical supplies, lab supplies and office supplies. Special invoices for supplies not available in storeroom. Placing orders with Pharmacy.

Demonstrates competency in Infection Prevention and Control Practices and Policies -

Possesses an understanding of infection prevention and control measures designed to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

o Follows hand hygiene policies and utilizes personal protective equipment as required.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
