Description

The Buyer procures all materials, hardware, goods, and supplies used within the organization.  Coordinates services where applicable. Determines materials specifications, obtains quotes, negotiates pricing and program details, and communicates such information to appropriate individuals and departments.  Generates and processes purchase orders.  Expedites materials when needed, communicates any material exceptions, and suggests alternatives where appropriate.  Responsible for inventory turns and levels for all assigned materials. Assists the Materials Services team with day-to-day operations within the department. 

Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities

  • Review requisitions, purchase orders, and vouchers for accuracy and conformance with department procedures.
  • Obtain written quotations from vendors and suppliers.  Document competitive bidding process.
  • Negotiate contracts with suppliers, including pricing, terms and conditions and lead times.
  • Place and expedite purchase orders; notify departments of the expected delivery dates and follow up on back orders
  • Monitor and evaluate assigned materials inventory to determine availability of items, safety stock on hand, and/or obsolescence issues.
  • Monitor suppliers’ performance levels to ensure on-time deliveries, quality of products or services, and pricing.
  • Search out alternative suppliers or materials in preparation of material shortages and stock outages.
  • Meet with vendors seeking to establish a supplier relationship with the company.  Review presented materials and forward the information to the appropriate parties with recommendations as to whether the vendor deserves further consideration.
  • Demonstrate a strong sense of urgency and willingness to do what it takes to service internal and external customers in expedited timeframes.
  • Work closely with other staff to suggest alternative materials or vendors where applicable.
  • Input material requisitions.
  • Send orders to vendors, verify and match acknowledgements to purchase orders.
  • Make calls to vendors to check on status of anticipated and/or overdue deliveries.
  • Maintain databases and spreadsheets, and accurately file documents.
  • Identify and make recommendations for potential cost savings.
  • Provide pricing and quote support for estimating.
  • Work in an extremely safe manner, following all safety rules and regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year College or University within supply chain management, logistics, purchasing, or a related field or minimum two years related field experience.
  • Prior purchasing experience within the steel industry or related metals manufacturing environment is preferred. 
  • Ability to pay close attention to details.
  • Knowledgeable in basic computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Able to read part prints, drawings, and specifications.
  • Possess strong time management and organizational skills; able to set and achieve goals; prioritize and manage multiple tasks and responsibilities with moderate supervision.
  • Possess excellent communication, interpersonal ,and negotiation skills.
  • Possess strong problem-solving, judgment, and decision-making skills.
  • Good attendance, reliability, and work performance records.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk, see, and hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach with hands and arms.  The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Minimal travel and/or driving is required.  Noise levels are typically low to moderate.
