THE POSITION
The Solution Architect serves as the lead architecture partner for one or more business products, platforms, or delivery teams. This role is responsible for translating business objectives, product strategies, and enterprise architecture guidance into practical solution designs that are scalable, secure, resilient, maintainable, and aligned with Wellington’s technology standards.
The Solution Architect works directly with Product Owners, Engineers, Technical Leads, Product Managers, Delivery Leads, and Enterprise Architects to shape the technical direction of product teams. The role balances short-term delivery needs with long-term architecture sustainability, ensuring solutions support both immediate business outcomes and future platform evolution.
The individual in this role must be comfortable moving between strategy, design, engineering, governance, and stakeholder engagement. They help teams solve complex technology challenges, manage dependencies, define non-functional requirements, and make effective technology decisions while maintaining alignment with Wellington’s architecture principles and standards.
Success in this role comes through technical leadership, collaboration, influence, and a demonstrated ability to help teams deliver high-quality solutions that create measurable business value.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Solution Design and Architecture Leadership
Lead architecture and technical design activities for one or more products, platforms, or solution domains.
Translate business requirements, product vision, and operational objectives into end-to-end solution architectures.
Create logical, physical, integration, data, security, and deployment architectures for business initiatives.
Ensure architecture investment decisions align with product priorities and long-term platform goals.
Collaborate with Enterprise Architects to ensure product roadmaps are aligned with enterprise technology strategies.
Support planning activities by identifying solution risks, required architecture investments, and implementation sequencing.
Help teams make informed build-versus-buy decisions based on business value, risk, complexity, and strategic alignment.
3. Architecture Governance and Standards Alignment
Ensure solution designs adhere to Wellington’s architecture standards, patterns, principles, and governance requirements.
Participate in Architecture Review Board reviews and architecture working groups where required.
Collaborate with Enterprise Architects to address architecture findings, design recommendations, and governance requirements.
Maintain traceability between architecture decisions, business requirements, and approved standards.
Contribute reusable patterns, design approaches, and implementation learnings back into the architecture community.
Support post-implementation architecture validations and design reviews.
Support post-implementation architecture reviews and validations to confirm that delivered solutions remain aligned with approved architecture direction and non-functional requirements.
Partner with technology risk, information security, infrastructure, data, and AI governance teams to ensure architecture decisions appropriately address control, compliance, resilience, and operational expectations.
4. Application, Data, and Integration Architecture
Design solutions that leverage strategic enterprise platforms, shared services, APIs, events, governed data products, and reusable business capabilities.
Define data flows, integration strategies, event-driven communication patterns, and service interactions across systems.
Ensure application architectures support scalability, high availability, operational resiliency, and data quality requirements.
Promote loosely coupled architectures and standard integration models that reduce complexity and improve reuse.
Partner with platform teams to leverage common capabilities while minimizing duplication of technology investments.
Ensure data is sourced from trusted, governed, and strategically aligned enterprise data assets.
5. Engineering Partnership and Delivery Enablement
Serve as the senior technical advisor to engineering teams throughout the software development lifecycle.
Collaborate with developers, technical leads, and DevSecOps teams to resolve design issues and implementation challenges.
Participate in code reviews, design reviews, and technical decision-making activities where architectural guidance is required.
Help define technical acceptance criteria and non-functional requirements.
Support Proofs of Concept, prototypes, and technology evaluations required to validate architectural approaches.
Guide teams on cloud-native design, infrastructure-as-code, automation, platform engineering, and deployment strategies.
6. Security, Resiliency, and Operational Excellence
Design architectures that incorporate monitoring, logging, telemetry, fault tolerance, and recovery capabilities.
Partner with Information Security, Infrastructure, Risk Management, and Operations teams to address architecture risks proactively.
Ensure systems are designed for operational stability and long-term maintainability.
Consider supportability, service levels, and operational ownership in all architecture decisions.
Promote architecture approaches that reduce operational complexity and improve platform reliability.
7. Stakeholder Engagement and Technical Leadership
Build strong relationships with Product Owners, delivery teams, platform leaders, and business stakeholders.
Communicate architecture recommendations in clear business and technical terms.
Drive decision-making through facts, analysis, and architectural expertise rather than authority alone.
Facilitate architecture workshops, design sessions, and technical planning discussions.
Mentor engineers and emerging architects in architecture methods, design patterns, and technology best practices.
Act as a trusted advisor who helps teams navigate complex technical decisions and competing priorities.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Technology, or related discipline.
8+ years of experience in software engineering, solution architecture, platform architecture, or related technology leadership roles.
Demonstrated experience architecting complex enterprise applications and distributed systems.
Strong understanding of cloud platforms, application architecture, integration patterns, event-driven architecture, APIs, microservices, and distributed computing.
Experience with modern software engineering practices including DevSecOps, CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, automated testing, and observability.
Experience designing secure, scalable, highly available, and resilient solutions.
Strong knowledge of data architecture, integration architecture, and enterprise application design.
Ability to work effectively across product, engineering, architecture, infrastructure, security, and business teams.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Excellent written, verbal, and executive communication abilities.
