The University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute (UMROI) is seeking an innovative and compassionate Nurse Manager to lead our renowned Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Program. This leadership position offers the opportunity to shape exceptional patient outcomes while guiding a highly skilled interdisciplinary team dedicated to helping individuals with spinal cord injuries achieve their highest level of independence and quality of life.
As one of the region's premier rehabilitation programs, UMROI provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services that support patients throughout their recovery journey. Our program includes medical management, pain and wound care, orthotics and wheelchair services, adaptive recreation, aquatics, assistive technology evaluations, outpatient follow-up care, support groups, swallowing and cognitive rehabilitation, Upper Extremity Clinic services, ENT care, and spasticity management.
Position Summary
Under general administrative direction, the Nurse Manager is accountable for the delivery of patient care services that support the strategic goals of the organization and achieve clinical, financial, operational, and service excellence objectives. The Nurse Manager provides leadership for nursing practice, staff development, patient safety, quality improvement, and interdisciplinary collaboration within the Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Program.
This role is responsible for ensuring the highest standards of clinical care, regulatory compliance, staff engagement, operational effectiveness, and patient experience while fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership & Patient Care Excellence
Direct and evaluate patient care delivery systems to meet clinical, service quality, and operational objectives.
Ensure excellence in clinical nursing practice and patient-centered care across the continuum of rehabilitation services.
Collaborate with physicians, therapists, case managers, and interdisciplinary team members to develop and enhance care delivery models.
Lead initiatives that improve patient outcomes, patient satisfaction, safety, and quality performance metrics.
Ensure compliance with professional standards, accreditation requirements, and regulatory agencies.
Champion evidence-based practice, innovation, and rehabilitation nursing excellence.
Operational & Financial Management
Manage human, financial, and operational resources to achieve departmental goals and budget targets.
Develop staffing plans that effectively respond to fluctuations in patient volume, acuity, and service demands.
Monitor and manage labor, supply, and capital expenditures.
Utilize data analytics and performance metrics to evaluate program effectiveness and drive operational improvements.
Promote efficient clinical utilization, discharge planning, and case management practices.
Team Development & Employee Engagement
Recruit, hire, onboard, mentor, and retain high-performing nursing staff.

Ensure timely reporting and follow-up of safety events, near misses, and identified risks.
Work Experience
Education & Experience
Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligibility for licensure due to Compact state agreement outlined through the MD Board of Nursing is required.
CPR certification is required.
Certification in area of specialty preferred
BSN required. Master’s degree with management coursework preferred
Minimum of four (4) years professional/supervisory experience involving competence in the clinical setting is required. Must have knowledge and proven performance in meeting professional standards.
