The Director leads the design and delivery of civic engagement programs to foster resident-driven innovation in local governments worldwide. They manage a team of subject matter experts, oversee program evaluation, and cultivate partnerships with city leaders and stakeholders.
Candidates must hold a Master's degree in Finance, business, or a related field with at least five years of experience, including three years in a management role. Preferred qualifications include ten years of experience in urban planning, public policy, or civic engagement, along with experience managing donor-funded programs.
The Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation at Johns Hopkins University (the Center) seeks a BCPI Director, Civic Engagement to manage the Center’s robust portfolio of civic engagement programs that draw on the insights and skills of residents to power better local solutions for cities and their residents. The first of its kind in the world, the Center aims to advance the field of public sector innovation by marrying cutting-edge practice with world-class research to transform the culture of government, deliver exceptional results for residents, and inspire trust in public service. The Center is housed within the JHU School of Government and Policy (SGP) alongside the Bloomberg Center for Government Excellence and the Center for Opportunity and Wealth Data.
With the support of grants, technical assistance, and other resources, the Center’s Civic Engagement Practice helps cities partner with residents and community members to design and implement projects that solve important public problems. Working closely with and under the supervision of the Executive Director of the Center, and in collaboration with other senior leaders at the Center, SGP leadership and faculty, and collaborating partners, the Director of Civic engagement leads a team to design and deliver programs focused on the ways in which residents contribute to the design, development, and delivery of new services and policy approaches in local governments around the world.
The Director must have a forward-thinking mindset and the vision to deliver impactful programs, both expanding on the legacy of existing initiatives and designing new ones. The ideal candidate demonstrates a strong point of view on the opportunity to reimagine the role and opportunities of local governments, what it means to create meaningful civic engagement, and the capacity for transformational resident-driven innovation. They must also possess strong management capacity to effectively build and implement programs and strategies in a fast-evolving environment.
