Options Community Services is a non-profit organization dedicated to delivering social services across the Southern Fraser region (Surrey, Delta, White Rock and Langley) from early childhood to seniors. Our comprehensive range of programs and services relies on collaborative relationships with individuals, businesses, community groups and government bodies to create focused, effective and responsive resources for the community.
Position Overview
Are you passionate about making a difference in people's lives and helping them turn a new page? Join us as a Shelter Worker, where you’ll be on the front lines of change, offering vital emergency care and empowering individuals to reclaim their independence. Here, you'll engage with residents with empathy and drive, collaborating to achieve meaningful goals and transforming lives.
Reporting to the Program Manager, our selected candidate will ensure that our residents have a safe and welcoming environment by securing the premises, conducting minor repairs, and responding to unsafe actions and conflicts among residents. Your role will include handling 24-hour referrals, extending stays as needed, and managing intake and orientation. You'll oversee the care and safety of both the residents and the shelter, set clear boundaries, and foster a positive atmosphere. Additionally, you'll supervise basic life skills, assist with hygiene, address resident barriers with collaborative plans, and provide resources and support while modeling appropriate behavior and encouraging resident participation.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate for this position will hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology or a related field, with at least one year of recent, relevant experience within the last five years, including work in substance abuse and mental illness. They should have training in crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and mediation skills, as well as cultural sensitivity training. While a combination of education and experience may be considered, preference will be given to those with crisis line experience. A current Level I First Aid certificate is required. A Class 5 Driver’s License and access to personal vehicle are preferred.
The ideal candidate will thrive in a dynamic environment, adapting to emerging trends and demands with high motivation and sensitivity. Superior time management, proven crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and mediation skills are essential, along with strong teamwork and communication abilities. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in developing program materials, a commitment to problem-solving, and the ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines while maintaining confidentiality.
This position follows a standard schedule: Saturday / Sunday - 3:00 PM –11:00 PM.
This position is open to all applicants and requires union membership.
This role requires the incumbent to undergo a Police Information Check (PIC), and a Vulnerable Sector Check by the Ministry of Justice.
