Chief Engineer – JLL
What this job involves:
As Chief Engineer at JLL, you will lead the operational management and daily leadership of our engineering team, ensuring the safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation of all building machinery and systems. This strategic role combines technical expertise with team leadership, requiring you to protect and enhance client asset value while driving toward our goal of 100% equipment uptime. You'll implement reliability-based maintenance programs, optimize building system performance, and cultivate a culture of operational excellence and professionalism. Your leadership will directly impact client satisfaction and facility performance, making you a critical partner in JLL's commitment to delivering exceptional property management services.
What your day-to-day will look like:
Building Systems Management: Monitor and maintain all critical building systems including HVAC, refrigeration, boilers, pumps, valves, and electrical equipment to ensure optimal facility performance. Review operational logs, identify equipment malfunctions, and oversee preventive maintenance programs while maintaining adequate inventory of tools and supplies for effective building operations.
Reliability and Performance Optimization: Implement and manage comprehensive reliability-based maintenance functions, execute equipment inspection and monitoring programs, and continuously evaluate maintenance strategies to enhance effectiveness, maximize uptime, and reduce operational costs through data-driven decision-making.
Safety and Regulatory Compliance: Identify and remediate safety hazards, administer comprehensive safety training programs for all engineering staff, and ensure full compliance with Federal, State, and Local regulations. Maintain all infrastructure documentation, building drawings, and compliance records while promptly alerting management to any discrepancies.
Team Leadership and Development: Supervise, hire, train, and develop engineers and maintenance staff while fostering professional growth through hands-on instruction, outside training programs, and certification initiatives. Ensure Critical Facility Work Authorization processes are understood and followed by all staff, contractors, and tenants.
Contractor and Project Oversight: Manage contractor activities within the facility, provide support for site-driven projects, assist with vendor management, and ensure all work meets safety standards and operational requirements while maintaining professional representation of client interests.
Preventive Maintenance Excellence: Develop and maintain comprehensive PM programs for all building systems, determine optimal repair and maintenance frequencies based on equipment conditions, and ensure work orders and preventive tasks are completed efficiently and within established timeframes.
Client Service and Communication: Deliver exceptional internal and external customer service through effective verbal and written communication, respond to emergency situations and after-hours calls as required, and maintain professional appearance and demeanor appropriate for all client-facing interactions.
Required Qualifications:
Education and Experience: Associate Degree in engineering discipline or equivalent work experience with 7+ years of facility-related work including demonstrated customer service, leadership, and supervisory experience in building operations management.
Technical Expertise: Comprehensive knowledge of HVAC systems, fluid handling/pumping, mechanical systems, electrical operations, and facility maintenance processes, along with working proficiency in computer applications including Microsoft Office and CMMS systems.
Certifications: Universal Technician certification for CFCs (required upon hire or within 90 days of employment) and Operating Engineers license (SMA) or equivalent preferred, with commitment to maintaining and pursuing additional credentials.
Leadership Capabilities: Proven managerial experience with strong supervisory skills for leading diverse engineering teams, problem-solving abilities for complex facility challenges, and track record of driving operational excellence and team development.
Professional Skills: Demonstrated verbal and written communication abilities for effective stakeholder interaction, proven record of excellent customer service delivery, and capability to implement policies and procedures for efficient team management.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related technical field with advanced understanding of building systems integration and facility management principles.
Experience with building automation systems (BAS), energy management platforms, and advanced monitoring technologies for optimizing facility performance and reducing energy consumption.
Knowledge of regulatory compliance requirements for commercial facilities including environmental regulations, life safety codes, and industry-specific standards.
Certification in project management (PMP), facilities management (CFM, FMA), or related professional credentials demonstrating commitment to industry best practices.
Experience with construction planning and execution for facility improvement projects, capital planning processes, and coordination of major building system upgrades or renovations.
