About the Opportunity
The primary function of this position will be to support the online monitors on FirstEnergy’s major equipment. These monitors provide the real-time condition of our power transformers, circuit breakers and DC battery banks. This information is used to perform condition-based assessments on these assets by feeding PI Historian and the software package, Application Performance Monitor (APM). This position will be responsible for developing operating standards and commissioning procedures for new/existing device monitors, maintaining communication of the monitors and resolving data quality issues, reviewing / escalating equipment issues as they arise This position will also assist during the installation of emergent monitoring package deployments as needed.
Responsibilities:
Champion online monitoring program implementation across the footprint. Ensure long-term planned work reflects the company’s goals for monitor deployment.
Research, test, and implement new monitoring solutions to help with better condition monitoring and operational decision making.
Work with the stakeholders (Transmission & Substation Services Department, substation operations, etc.) to develop new or refined monitor test routines and protocols.
Assist in the development of new or in the modification of existing maintenance practices to address changing technology, new equipment types, improved test and diagnostic methods, regulatory changes, etc.
Work with FE IT Department, recommend design standard changes to the IT/OT interfaces within FE System assets where applicable.
Work with the vendors and the IT department on the mitigation of any vulnerabilities identified.
Monitor industry trends and international design standards and recommend design standard changes where applicable.
Work with the Work Force Development Department to develop training material for new and existing operational technology being deployed on the FE System.
Assist in the education of others on technical subject matters and in the improvement of technical programs and process effectiveness.
Conduct technical research and analyzing highly complex data
Recommend and implement technical solutions to complex issues and assignments.
Independently anticipate and meet internal/external technical needs.
Derive business requirements from various internal and external stakeholders to develop solutions, processes, and procedures.
Develop process improvements and efficiencies to improve work products.
Maintain a safe workplace for coworkers and the community based upon knowledge of potential hazards and industry regulations/requirements.
Work with Cascade and Maintenance Compliance personnel and IT organization as needed.
Provide support to FEU personnel on information and /or reports related to Substation Assets.
Actively seek ways to build, challenge and add value within scope of assignments.
Providing advice, education, and encouragement to others.
Recommending improvements to strategy, application usage and process.
Qualifications at the Engineer II level:
Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering (BSEE, BSCE, BSME) from an ABET accredited institution is required. Acceptable alternatives are: (1) a Professional Engineer’s (PE) License (2) a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited institution (3) a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering or technical field of study (non-ABET) plus an advanced degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor’s program.
A Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certificate is preferred.
Minimum of 2 (two) years of Engineering experience is required.
Understanding of substation equipment and monitors preferred.
Strong consideration will be given to those with previous experience in the design, maintenance or testing of substation equipment
Commitment to FirstEnergy’s Safety Policies and the Accident Prevention Handbook
Ability to read and understand substation design prints and bills of material preferred.
Familiarity with the following – APM / PI Vision / Cascade / QlikView / SAP / TOA4 / Crossbow / DobleWeb is preferred.
Highly proficient with Microsoft Office tools, including Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Power BI, and Word.
Demonstrate a questioning attitude to continue to learn, produce results, and strengthen existing relationships.

The estimated pay range for this role is $71,400- $145,800. The pay range for certain locations, including the state of New Jersey, include a 20% differential to account for an increased cost of living, making the pay range $85,680 - $174,960.
