Position Summary
Resources for Human Development is seeking compassionate and dedicated Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) to provide person-centered support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and behavioral health challenges. DSPs play a critical role in helping individuals achieve greater independence, maintain their health and safety, and actively participate in their communities.
This position provides direct care, skill development, transportation, medication administration, and support with daily living activities while fostering a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment.
Essential Responsibilities
Direct Care & Individual Support
Assist individuals with activities of daily living, including personal care, grooming, dressing, meal preparation, housekeeping, laundry, and household maintenance.
Promote independence, self-advocacy, and community inclusion.
Provide supervision, guidance, and skill-building opportunities based on individual goals and needs.
Support individuals' physical, emotional, and overall well-being using trauma-informed practices.
Maintain a safe and supportive living environment.
Individualized Service Implementation
Implement Individual Service Plans (ISP), Individual Habilitation Plans (IHP), and Behavior Support Plans (BSP).
Assist individuals in achieving personal goals and outcomes.
Teach and reinforce daily living, social, communication, and adaptive skills.
Follow behavioral support strategies and supervision requirements as outlined in service plans.
Medication Administration & Health Support
Administer medications according to physician orders, agency policies, and regulatory requirements.
Monitor health status and implement prescribed healthcare programs.
Maintain accurate medication administration records and health documentation.
Respond appropriately to medical concerns and emergencies.
Transportation & Community Engagement
Safely transport individuals to appointments, programs, recreational activities, family visits, and community events.
Operate agency or personal vehicles in accordance with applicable laws and agency policies.
Ensure safety and supervision during community activities and transportation.
Crisis Prevention & Safety
Recognize and respond to potential crisis situations.
Utilize approved de-escalation and intervention techniques.
Report incidents, accidents, abuse, neglect, or safety concerns according to agency procedures.
Maintain a secure environment for all individuals served.
Documentation & Compliance
Complete accurate and timely documentation, including:
Daily service logs
Goal tracking records
Medication administration records
Incident and behavioral reports
Health monitoring documentation
Other required agency and regulatory records
Maintain confidentiality of participant and organizational information.
Accurately record work hours in the organization's timekeeping system.
Program Operations
Assist with household management, shopping, meal planning, recreational activities, and community-based supports.
Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and agency initiatives.
Collaborate with supervisors, team members, family members, and service providers to ensure quality care.
Support licensing, compliance, and quality improvement activities.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
Required:
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
Preferred:
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Human Services or a related field
Experience
Preferred:
Six months to one year of experience supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities or in a human services setting.
Licenses & Certifications
Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record required.
Current vehicle registration and insurance, as applicable.
CPR and First Aid certification, or ability to obtain within required timeframe.
Completion of all required orientation and annual training programs.
Additional Requirements
Ability to successfully pass all required background checks, clearances, and drug screenings.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of person-centered supports and services for individuals with IDD.
Understanding of trauma-informed care practices.
Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to maintain accurate documentation and records.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic documentation systems.
Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Ability to remain calm and professional during emergencies or crisis situations.
Ability to communicate effectively with individuals served, families, coworkers, and community partners.
Flexibility to work varied schedules and locations as needed.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift, transfer, and/or assist individuals and objects exceeding 50 pounds.
Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, twist, and climb stairs.
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
Ability to drive for extended periods as needed.
Ability to safely provide physical assistance and support when required.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in residential homes and community settings throughout New Jersey.
Per diem schedules vary based on program needs.
Availability for days, evenings, overnights, weekends, holidays, and emergency coverage may be required.
Compliance with OSHA, HIPAA, infection control, fire safety, and all agency policies is required.
