Full job description
Job Requirements
Renowned as the academic flagship of the University of Maryland Medical System, our Magnet®-designated facility is a nationally recognized, academic medical center offering a wide range of opportunities across the continuum of care. We invite you to join UMMC and experience a dynamic environment where diverse talents and innovative ideas converge to elevate patient care and advance the science and practice of nursing. Situated in the heart of downtown Baltimore, near the vibrant Inner Harbor and Camden Yards, our location provides an inspiring and energetic setting that fosters professional growth and personal fulfillment.
General Summary
This role represents the foundational nursing position at UMMC for professionals with more than 12 months of clinical experience. The Experienced Nurse in the Med Surge/Tele Admission Unit within the Adult Emergency Department (Night Shift) will demonstrate proficiency in the essential skills and knowledge required to deliver high-quality patient care. This nurse will actively engage in unit governance, contributing to decision-making processes that enhance clinical practice and operational efficiency. Adherence to the UMMC Professional Nurse Job Charter is expected, ensuring that all care is delivered in accordance with established standards and ethical guidelines.
The nurse will independently provide and coordinate comprehensive care to patients within their clinical specialty, managing complex cases with critical thinking and clinical judgment. As a fully integrated member of the multidisciplinary patient care team, this nurse collaborates effectively with physicians, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes. They will exemplify the full spectrum of professional nursing practice, not only through direct patient care but also by participating in the development and implementation of evidence-based strategies aimed at improving patient outcomes, enhancing satisfaction with services, and promoting cost-effective care delivery at the unit level.
Accountability is a cornerstone of this role; the nurse is responsible to patients and their families for the quality and safety of care throughout each episode of treatment. Additionally, the nurse is accountable to their peers for fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development within the unit. Reporting to the nurse manager, the nurse is responsible for the comprehensive execution of assigned duties, contributing to the overall success and efficiency of the unit’s operations. This position offers a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a fast-paced, patient-centered environment while advancing your nursing career in a supportive and innovative academic medical center.
Work Experience
Education and Experience
Demonstrated competent evaluation with successful completion of probationary period, ensuring compliance with all mandatory classes and training requirements. Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland is required, or eligibility to practice under the Nurse Licensure Compact agreements as outlined by the Maryland Board of Nursing. Candidates must maintain a minimum of 10 contact hours of continuing education annually to stay current with best practices and regulatory standards. Active membership in a recognized professional nursing organization is preferred to support ongoing professional development and networking. Recent and relevant clinical experience in a comparable acute care setting, particularly in medical-surgical, telemetry, or emergency department environments, is essential to ensure readiness for the demands of the role.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Proven leadership capabilities demonstrated through roles such as charge nurse, preceptor, or clinical resource, with a track record of effectively guiding multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality patient care. Strong collaboration skills to function effectively within diverse healthcare teams, promoting a culture of respect and shared responsibility. Proficiency in utilizing electronic health record systems and other healthcare technologies to accurately document and manage patient information, ensuring data integrity and confidentiality. Comprehensive understanding of patient care principles tailored to the specific needs of adult populations served in medical-surgical, telemetry, and emergency settings. Ability to apply knowledge of growth and developmental stages across the lifespan, enabling accurate assessment and individualized care planning based on population-specific and age-specific requirements. Exceptional interpersonal skills, with demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication, facilitating clear and compassionate interactions with patients, families, and healthcare colleagues.
Patient Safety
Commitment to ensuring patient safety through vigilant performance of all job functions and active participation in hospital, departmental, and unit-based patient safety initiatives. Proactively identifies and addresses potential risks to patient safety, taking timely corrective actions to mitigate hazards. Responsible for reporting adverse events, near misses, and safety concerns promptly to appropriate management authorities to support continuous quality improvement. Skilled in recognizing vulnerabilities in clinical processes, procedures, and medical devices, and effectively communicating these risks to leadership and relevant stakeholders to foster a safe care environment.
