The role involves supporting the DIA's Congressional Relations and Strategic Communications branches by producing polished legislative and historical communications. You will also conduct deep historical research and manage quality control for various high-visibility products.
Requirements
Candidates must possess an active Top Secret/SCI clearance with a CI Polygraph and at least 5 years of professional technical editing or writing experience. A bachelor's degree in a relevant field is required, along with strong research skills and proficiency in AP Style.
Full job description
Overview
Help shape how the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) communicates with Congress and preserves its own history. As a Technical Editor/Writer, you'll polish the notifications and briefing materials that go to U.S. Legislative Staff one day, then dig into archives and historical narratives bound for the DIA Heritage Museum the next. It's a rare mix: high-stakes, fast-turnaround Hill-facing writing paired with deep historical research, done at the heart of the nation's defense intelligence mission.
Join FWI as a Technical Editor/Writer, Level 2 to support the DIA Office of Communication & Engagement (OCE). This is a blended role split between two OCE missions: supporting the Congressional Relations Branch's notifications to U.S. Legislative Staff and the Strategic Communications Branch's briefings, articles, and other communications products; and supporting the DIA History Branch's (HSTB) research, writing, and oral history mission, including materials for the DIA Heritage Museum. You will produce polished, accurate, on-deadline written products for both Capitol Hill-facing and historical audiences, working closely with OCE and HSTB staff throughout.
Work Schedule and Location:
On-Site: This full-time on-site position will work Monday through Friday, 0800-1600 at the DIA Headquarters in Washington DC.
Responsibilities
Support the Congressional Relations Branch's mission of notifying U.S. Legislative Staff, assisting with Congressional briefings and documents in support of the DIA mission.
Support HSTB's research and writing mission on topics of interest to DIA, the Intelligence Community, or the Department of Defense.
Research, write, and edit legislative, communications, and historical products, effectively managing and supporting multiple high-visibility production efforts simultaneously.
Perform a final quality check on materials before publication, correcting grammar, punctuation, spelling, and classification markings, and ensuring photos, illustrations, names, places, organizations, facts, dates, and statistics are accurate — including contacting sources and conducting research as needed.
Ensure products conform to the applicable style guide (AP Style for corporate materials; DIA's Correspondence Guide for formal and Congressional correspondence).
Assist OCC with proper grammar usage in support of briefings, including design and layout, animations, interactive multimedia, video conferencing, and other visual products.
Work closely with writers and visual information specialists, suggesting changes to enhance readability, conciseness, and consistency of tone and style.
Assist OCC and HSTB staff in researching topics and locating source materials in support of legislative, communications, and history-related products, including the DIA Heritage Museum.
Work well under tight deadlines; handle detailed, repetitive, and methodical work with a high degree of accuracy.
Communicate effectively in written and spoken English and collaborate well within a team environment.
Attend customer meetings and information sessions as needed to complete projects, including weekly team and division syncs.
Qualifications
Required:
Active TOP SECRET/SCI clearance with Counterintelligence (CI) Polygraph.
Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, History, or a related field (equivalent experience considered).
5+ years of professional technical editing/writing experience, ideally including Congressional/legislative correspondence and historical research or writing.
Strong research skills and demonstrated ability to manage and support multiple high-visibility production efforts.
Excellent command of written and spoken English, including AP Style conventions.
Ability to work onsite in Washington, DC and adhere to a standard 0800–1700 schedule.
Desired:
Experience preparing or editing correspondence, briefings, or documents intended for Congressional/legislative audiences.
Formal education or practical experience in history, with prior work producing museum, exhibit, or archival content.
Experience supporting DoD or Intelligence Community clients.
Familiarity with oral history collection methods and cataloging of historical artifacts and documents.
FWI is an Equal Opportunity Employer, including disability/vets.
