Full job description
Purpose. Performance. People.
Joining CPP Investments means joining one of the world’s most admired and respected institutional investors to drive a single mandate: to deliver strong, sustainable returns for generations of Canadians.
With a long-term horizon and global reach, we deploy capital at scale across public and private markets. Our size, stability, and disciplined investment philosophy allow us to pursue complex opportunities and build enduring partnerships worldwide.
For our people, this means meaningful work with tangible impact, real opportunity, and collaboration with exceptional colleagues who value partnership and performance. Here, you’ll contribute to outcomes that matter alongside team members committed to excellence and shared success.
The Role
As Managing Director, Portfolio Value Creation, you will lead the identification, development and execution of strategic and operational value creation opportunities across CPP Investments’ private investment portfolio. Working globally with investment teams, portfolio company management teams, boards and co-sponsors, you will help drive sustainable business performance and long-term investment value. You will serve as a trusted senior advisor, bringing commercial judgement, an enterprise perspective and deep value creation expertise across the investment lifecycle.
The Team
Portfolio Value Creation (PVC) is a global team of 30+ experienced professionals based in Toronto, New York, London and São Paulo. The team partners with CPP Investments’ private investment teams, portfolio company management teams and co-sponsors to maximize value across material direct equity investments, working across the full investment lifecycle from diligence and onboarding through value creation, governance and exit.
Accountabilities
Lead the identification and prioritization of strategic and operational value creation opportunities across the private investment portfolio, bringing an enterprise and cross-portfolio perspective to maximize long-term investment value.
Build trusted relationships with portfolio company CEOs and management teams, boards, investment teams, co-sponsors and senior leaders across CPP Investments, serving as a senior advisor and constructive thought partner.
Lead commercial and operational diligence for potential investments, assessing value creation potential, management capability, execution risks and post-close priorities to inform investment decision-making.
Lead the onboarding of new investments, including Day 1 readiness, 100-day planning, governance setup and rigorous development and assessment of value creation plans.
Partner with investment teams and portfolio companies to establish effective governance and active ownership models, including board and management effectiveness, decision rights, performance management and management incentives.
Lead and oversee high-impact value creation initiatives from diagnostic and business case development through implementation, benefits realization and sustained performance improvement, leveraging financial analysis, benchmarking, data, advanced analytics and AI-enabled tools where appropriate.
Develop PVC’s capabilities and impact through intellectual capital, tools, operating practices and cross-portfolio insights, while mentoring and developing high-performing PVC professionals.
What You Bring
12+ years of relevant professional experience, including significant experience in private capital portfolio operations and value creation, senior operating roles, management consulting and/or related investment environments.
Demonstrated success leading significant value creation and business transformation initiatives that deliver measurable financial and operational results.
Deep expertise across strategic and operational value creation disciplines such as revenue growth, commercial effectiveness, operational efficiency, digital and technology, procurement, organizational effectiveness, management incentives and governance.
Significant experience in deal and investment environments, including acquisitions, commercial and/or operational diligence, investment decision support, onboarding, asset management and value realization.
Strong commercial and financial judgement, with the ability to move from strategic analysis through implementation and make effective decisions in complex and ambiguous environments.
Exceptional leadership, stakeholder management and communication skills, including experience working with C-suite executives, boards and senior investment professionals and developing high-performing, inclusive teams.
An advanced degree and/or relevant professional designation, such as the CFA designation, is preferred.
You are motivated to contribute to something larger than yourself, approach complex challenges with rigor, and hold yourself to high standards in a collaborative, performance-driven environment.
We provide colleagues with cutting-edge AI tools, dedicated learning time, and practical support to help them deliver with greater impact.
Inclusion & Accessibility
CPP Investments is committed to equitable access to employment and building a workforce that reflects diverse talent and perspectives. If you require accommodation at any stage of the recruitment process, please let us know and we will work with you to meet your needs.
Attention: Protect Yourself from Fraud
CPP Investments is committed to a secure and transparent recruitment process. We will never ask candidates for payment or financial information at any stage of hiring. All legitimate opportunities are posted on our careers page, and communications will come from our applicant tracking system, Workday.
CPP Investments may use AI tools to help screen and assess applicants by analyzing resumes and applications for relevant skills and experience. These tools support, but do not replace, human decision-making.
CPP Investments is a professional investment management organization with a vital purpose: to help provide a foundation on which Canadians build financial security in retirement. To help maximize the CPP Fund for generations to come, we invest across all major asset classes: public equities, private equities, real estate, infrastructure and fixed income instruments.
